Larry's Story

Life Graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a BFA in Theatre and a concentration in directing. Actually, I finished in December, 1972, but didn't get the degree until May, 1973. From there I stage managed at a dinner theatre in suburban Philadelphia while driving a truck during the day and applying to graduate school. Although set to go to Villanova, when I learned that David Rabe just left the faculty, I decided to go in a new direction and get my MFA in Arts and Theatre Management from Florida State University where I spent one year on campus in Tallahassee and then one year as the assistant to the managing director of Asolo, the State Theatre in Sarasota. After getting my MFA, I was the general manager of the Folger Theatre Group (now the Shakespeare Theatre) in D.C. for two years. I then took a year off trying to start a theatre in Philadelphia and ended up as the first Executive Director of the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center in York, PA. I was there for a little over two years renovating and opening two old vaudeville theatres. It is now considered one of the most successful Performing Arts Centers in the country for a community of its size. From there I went to be manager of the North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, MA for about 21 months and then moved to be Executive Director of the Hub Performing Arts Center in Hempstead, NY. It turned out the financial backing didn't exist at the Hub, so I left after 5 months and went to consult with a company in Atlantic City while pondering my future. Since I did so many contracts in my life, I decided to try law school, only as a door to producing in TV and film, never intending to really practice law. So, off I went to L.A. in August, 1983 to attend law school at Southwestern University School of Law, which had one of the largest selections of entertainment related classes. Upon graduation, and going through 3 years of hell, I decided that I should at least practice for a w...Expand for more
hile. I then spent a year in Contracts and Sales Administration at Paramount Domestic Television reviewing distribution agreements. From there I went to be the second staff attorney at publicly held Westwood One, Inc., where I stayed for 6.5 years ending as the number two lawyer out of four. From Westwood One I went to Landmark Entertainment Group as General Counsel for almost four years working in everything from theme park design, development, construction, television production and distribution and live theatre (we produced the never ending touring production of Jesus Christ Superstar with the guys who starred in the movie). I then did a 180 degree turn and went to a real law firm where I had to bill hours. I hated billing hours and tried to quit after a year and they wouldn't let me so I stayed for 5.5 years until the firm broke up. At the firm I represented radio networks and radio station groups as well as television production companies. Since the firm was an affiliate of one of the largest Canadian firms, I worked on numerous TV shows shot in Canada for the U.S. When the firm broke up I opened my own office in August, 2003 and although scary, it's the best thing I have ever done. I primarily represent production companies in television. A lot of reality programming, including several on Bravo and other networks. I just finished helping a client get $9 million from a hedge fund to finance a new half hour daily, M-F strip program that we expect to be the next Judge Judy. It's called Jury Duty and the pitch line is Hollywood Squares meets People's Court. We have a 3 person celebrity jury and the judge is Bruce Cutler, who is now defending Phil Spector. As for my private life, I waited long and hard to find the right person with whom to share my life. I met Paula in November, 2000, just four months after buying my house. We were married on December 28, 2003, the first time for both of us, and will spend the rest of our lives together.
