Larry's Story
After graduation from Clarksville High School, I received my draft notice. At the time a lottery system by birth date was being used and my number was pretty low. I was sure to be drafted so I enlisted in the United States Air Force. My career specialty was in Aircraft Control and Warning (AC&W) RADAR maintenance. I served 3 overseas tours. One 3 year assignment to West Germany,before the Berlin Wall fell and 2 remote tours to Iceland. I was an AC&W RADAR maintenance instructor at Keesler AFB, Biloxi, MS for 5 years teaching new recruits how to maintain the AC&W RADARS located throughout the US and in foreign countries. In addition to the above mentioned assignments, I was station at Aiken Air Force Station, SC,, Charleston Air Force Station, SC, Cudjoe Key Air Force Station, FL (near Key West, FL). I was interviewed and hired by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at the RADAR site on Tyndall Air Force Base. My job was to maintain the Air Route Surveillance RADAR (ARSR) and all associated electronics equipment on site. After 6 years at the Tyndall ARSR, I was transferred to the Newport ARSR site in MS. I retired from the FAA on 31 August 2016 after 25 years and 6 months.
With the help of my wife of 46 years, we are attempting to clean out, pack up and/or give away some of the "stuff" we have acquired throughout the years. It's an awesome and frustrating task but we want to move back home to TN, so it has to be completed before our home here can be sold.
If you read this, please pray that our process of moving can happen without further delays. I hope to meet and rekindle friendships with classmates still around when I get back "HOME".
