Larry's Story

Picture is with my two Great Grand-daughters they are a hand full. I spent 32 Years in The Ill Air National Guard , 28 as a full time Aircraft Mechanic as a Federal Civil Service employee. I retired at 50 & went to work For the State Dept of Public Aid 14 months later as a Temp then Full time. I was there 21 years & 5 months . I retired on June 1st 2012. My family hopes it will be the final work retirement party they have for me. Still married to Roxann since 8/16/1957. We had 4 kids a girl,Kelly then a boy Tracy, then a girl, Lenore then another boy Chad. We lost the youngest one, Chad At 22. We have 5 grand children and two great grand children, with a third ,a boy on the way. I finally retired. on May 30, 2012. Why I retired. Why? Because I’m an OLD Fart & my family thinks I should. No plans yet. A short biography. I’ve been working since I was about 12, selling papers here in Springfield, a paper carrier for the Chicago Daily News (both an uncle & my dad were managers) in Litchfield, & Rockford where I was a “Head Carrier,” (If a route didn’t have a carrier or he/she was sick I had to deliver their papers) I worked in a Paint store in Rockford when we moved out of town. In 1957 we moved to Peoria where I delivered the papers to the carriers. After High school I Joined the Illinois Air National Guard 4 days before I turned 18. I got married on August 16, 1959. I worked at Caterpillar in the office, then as a Millwr...Expand for more
ight apprentice. The Unit was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis. After the unit was deactivated, we (my wife & kids) moved to Vandalia where I worked in a warehouse, then for the local paper. I was discharged from the Guard on Nov 16, 1963, rejoined on Feb 14, 1964. I was hired as a temporary Aircraft Maintenance Technician in April of 1964. I transferred from the Peoria Unit to Springfield in May of 1972, & retired from Federal Civil Service and the guard unit in October 1989. I transferred to the Retired Reserve & stayed until I turned 60. I took a temporary job with the state of Illinois Public Aid Dept. on the 2nd of January 1991. After 6 months as a temp I was hired on contract for a couple of years then became a full time State employee in 1994 at Public Aid where I have been every since. I have been working for 60 years I guess I am a little tired. Most of the time I enjoyed what I was doing, I liked teaching new recruits the duties required to maintain & service assigned aircraft. I transferred the teaching to the job I have now working with billers and co-workers. I have several “rules” I like to follow or sayings I believe. “If it was easy anyone could do it.” “If it isn’t broke don’t fix it.” “If it is Broke fix it right the first time” ”If all else fails read the directions” “Use the KISS method. (Keep It Simple Stupid).” “The longer you go to college the dumber you get.”
