Larry's Story
Life
Larry McKim was born October 21, 1943 in Portland, OR. He was raised in a U. S. Navy family; his father, Clarence, CPO, U. S. Navy Retired, was a Pearl Harbor survivor during World War II and also a Korean War Veteran. He joined the U. S. Army in December 1960 and retired as a 1st SGT of the Infantry in December 1980. He is a Vietnam Veteran. His highest military award is the Bronze Star for Valor. He graduated from Sierra Nevada College, Incline Village, NV, with a Bachelor of Science in Management in May 1987. He took early retirement from Law Enforcement in Nevada in 1990. He has worked various Information Technology contract positions at Fort Huachuca, AZ, deploying to Baghdad, Iraq for the year of 2004 as an IT Help Desk Supervisor. He is currently fully retired.
Larry is a Life Member of: The Veterans of Foreign Wars; the Special Forces Association; the Military Order of the Cooties, the Honor Degree of the VFW; and the 173rd Airborne Brigade Association. He is a Past Commander of VFW Post 9972, Sierra Vista, AZ, the largest VFW Post in the state and the seventh largest of over 9,000 VFW Posts worldwide. thern Arizona Veterans Community as President of the Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery Foundation, as a Service Officer with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and as a founding member of the United Veterans Council of Sierra Vista. He is active in the Sierra Vista Community as President of the Board of Directors for the London Square II Home Owners Association, as an Officer of the West End Association Inc., and as an Ad Hoc member of the Down Town Neighborhood Commission.
Larry McKim married Ella M. Carley in June 1967 at Pacific Grove, CA. They have four children: George, SGT, U.S. Army Veteran was recalled to active duty during the Gulf War; David, CPT, U.S. Army is an Operation Iraqi Freedom Veteran; Michelle is married to Will Booker, SGT, U.S. Army who is an Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom Veteran; and Michael, SFC, U.S. Army is an Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom Veteran; and they have eight grand children. His brother, Steven, Sr CPO, U.S. Navy Retired, is a Gulf War Veteran. Larry and Ella have resided in Sierra Vista for seventeen years; his family has maintained residence in Southern Arizona since 1965.
