Laura's Story

Life Started out being born in Alaska, lived there off and on and spent several years living in Port Angeles, Wa, where I attended both Franklin and Lincoln schools. Moved to Vancouver, Wa and then to Lacey, Wa , due to my Dad's job requirements with the state. Graduated from North Thurston HS in Lacey, Washington in 1974. Joined the United States Marine Corps in 1975 where I served & retired from in October 1998. I've been lucky enough to live in & visit places both around the world & in the USA, having seen both the best and worst of humanity. I've met alot of great folks both here & abroad, friends, that I've still kept in touch with. I did try the marriage thing, but it did not work out. After over a decade of being single, Jerry found me. At our class reunion in 1994, he & I clicked but lost touch. He found me on Classmates in 2002, & to make a long story short, we were married in July 2004. My husband's name is Jerry Thorsell & we have known each other since the 7th grade. We were in the same high school graduation class. We have 5 children(Jerry has 2 boys & 1 daughter, I have 2 daughters) between us, 3 granddaughters & 4 grandsons. For those of you who know me, my daughter Sandie & her other half David, have 2 children, Alexis, 9, Jacob, 3. They live in Vancouver, Wa. Sandie works for UPS & Dave is a manager for a steel company. My younger daughter Kristin just got out of the Marine Corps after 6 years, is married to Dan, whose making the Air Force a career. His dad is a retired Marine, whom I've known for years. Kristin & Dan have a son, Aidan who is 2. They are currently calling Hill AFB, Utah home. Jerry's daughter lives in the Dallas, Tx area, where, we hope to spend time riding our Harleys when we become semi-full retired for part of every year. We really like that part of the country. His sons live in the Charleston, SC area and we hope to make more trips out that way too. Jerry retired from the Navy after 20 years as a Master Chief & now works for the Washington State Patrol. I'm a civil service worker at Madigan Army Medical Center on Fort Lewis, working in the Emergency Room. We sold our home in the Seattle area in 2005 and relocated back to Lacey. We bought a home that's the perfect size for us, visitors, 2 spoiled cats, 1 very large Red Doberman, Harleys, quads, & toy hauler. We do not plan on moving again. Jerry & I spend alot of time in the outdoors (hiking/walking), photography, checking out motorcycle & muscle/hot rod car shows & getting ...Expand for more
in the sights of the Great Northwest on our Harleys & on the off roads with our quads. The quads have become a great family sport for us all. There is always something to do here year round. We are also the proud owners of Cherished Images Photography (cherishedimagesphoto.com). Would love to hear from any one from the past. Military After graduating high school, I enlisted in the US Marine Corps. I went into the Military Police(5811) field. My 1st duty station after boot camp & MOS school was MCAS, Beaufort, SC. I was also there again on the drill field at Parris Island in good old Beaufort, SC. My oldest daughter was born while we were stationed at MCAS Beaufort. I went back on active duty in 1980, this time going into the Motor Transport(3533) field. I was stationed at Camp Pendelton where I served as a Road Master for the 1stMarDiv. My younger daughter was born at Pendelton. I spent time in several different units & moved up to become a Motor T Operations Chief. HQMC let me change my MOS to 3529 while I was stationed with the 9th ESB(One of the best units, the most fun & the best physical condition of my career). I spent several years as a Maintenance Chief. I also worked as a Maintenance Management Chief & a MIMMS(MC Intergreted Maintenance Management System) Chief. For almost half of my time in the Corps, I served as a formal schools instructor at Motor T School(MCSSS), Camp Johnson(Camp Lejeune), teaching Tractor Trailer/Wrecker Operations/MIMMS, & a primary instructor for the NCO/ SNCO/Officer courses. I was also stationed with Women RecruitTrnBn, 8th ESB, 2nd RadioBn, & 8th CommBn. Two of my highlights in the Marine Corps was being selected by General Walls of the 2nd FSSG to speak in front of Congress in 1992 to the Presidental Commission on Assignment of Women in Combat, & being interviewed and written about by Newsweek Magazine in the 1980's. As colateral duties, I served as the Drug/Alcohol Rep, EEO/Sexual Harassment Rep, Training NCO, MC Ball Rep, coffee maker, baby sitter & as all career Marines, a multitude of other duties/responsibilities. I also got involved with the Camp Johnson Young Marines & served as the 1stSgt/SDI for the great group of young people. I retired from the Marines in October 1998, sad to go, but time to move on & begin a new career & life. The saying, "Once a Marine, Always a Marine" is so true, & the men/women of the Corps are friends/family for life. I miss so many of my Marine Corps family & hope the VERY BEST for them ALL!!!
