Laura's Story
Life
It's been thirty years, 6 different schools (including tech and community colleges), six moves ( Germany, New Mexico,Louisiana, SC, VA, SC) two kids, three dogs, seven cats, several hamsters and fish, death of three parents (my mother, my in-laws)remarriage of father, three sisters remarried, two Bachelor's degrees, eight jobs, seven cars, one condo, one apartment and four houses. BUT, I have been married to the same guy since 1984.
School
I was at Douglass HS in 1973 as a freshman in the old Kennedy building down the street. We moved to Lawton the following year. My sister Cathy was there as a Freshman and a Sophomore. She played the flute in the marching band.
College
Ok State Tech was a lot of fun back then--except I ran out of money for food because I used all my tickets at the student restaurant as opposed to the mess hall. I collected bottles and used the money to buy burritos at 7-11! I met the guy who was commissioned to paint Secretariat (triple crown winner). It's his work on all those pr...Expand for more
ints that were made. (Paul Wooldrige)
all the other schools were tame, as I was older and married. I became a straight-A student, graduated summa cum laude.
Workplace
I am currently subbing as an art teacher. My second degree (just graduated last May) was in art ed. I'm having to sub just to get my foot in the door. I really love working with the kids in art room. Maybe I'll get a full time position for next fall. They start hiring in February--or maybe someone will get pregnant and go on maternity leave! I can only hope.
Military
I spent two years as a military "significant other" in Mannheim, Germany from 1982-1984. We didn't get married until 1984, right before John left the service. We married in Basel, Switzerland in a civil ceremony with four other couples. We stood up, agreed to marry each other, and that was it. (In Europe, many countries require a civil marriage before a religious one can take place.) My husband, John, was in the 295th Av co as a Chinook pilot. That company no longer exists.
