Laura's Story
Life
I was in the Army from 1975-1979. I got married in 1984 to Van. My daughter, Sarah, was born in 1986; my son, Andrew, was born in 1988. I've worked in many places (McDonnell Douglas, St. Louis Children's Hospital, Petrolite Corp., etc.) since leaving the Army, most often as a secretary or office manager. I was a stay-at-home mom for eight years after my son was born. I worked for the Hazelwood School District for almost four years as a non-certified teacher assistant. Lost my job (the best thing that ever happened to me) then found a job as an administrative assistant for a non-profit organization. Five years later, I'm still with that organization and am now an executive assistant and have my own office
School
First of all, I'll say that I hated school. Not because it was so hard or I hated anything (besides P.E. which, by the way, should have been graded on effort and not ability!), but because I hated getting up in the morning. My senior year was the best (in g...Expand for more
rades and in attitude) because I didn't have to get up early. My biggest regret is not taking more math and science. At that time we weren't required to take any math and science after 9th grade, so I didn't. Big mistake! I also wish I had gone to college right after high school instead of going into the Army. Now I feel like I'll never finish college. I also wish I had been less shy. Well, you know what they say about hindsight!
Military
It's hard to believe I've been out of the Army so long. It seems like another lifetime ago. I had my basic training at Ft McClellan and my AIT at Ft Ben Harrison. I was stationed at Ft Eustis for a year and then went to Hawaii. General Schwarzkopf was actually in my unit in Hawaii, but he wasn't famous then. That's my claim to fame. I wonder if he remembers me. I was the one who helped him when he wanted to check out golf clubs from the CINCPAC gear locker. General, if you read this, please e-mail me. I'd love to hear from you!
