Laura's Story

I attended Bishop O'Dowd from 9/67 to 10/70. After so many years in Roman Catholic parochial school, I boycotted going to school period! My folks did not want a truant, so they finally relented! This rebellious act finally convinced my folks I wanted to have the experience of attending public school, before my college years. Boy, did this ever make Fr. Wagner fume..I told him I just wanted a change & was on my way to Oakland High. The rest of my senior year was cool!My debonair, sophisticated, erudite Uncle Albert taught at Oakland High. He was my mentor and idol!I followed him into the teaching profession....For in the final analysis...it is all about forming young minds. "It is what it is", as young folk all around the country evoke as their mantra. One of my favorite motivational sayings resounds: "It's not so much where you are coming from, it's where you are going to, that matters!" I became a substitute teacher for middle school and high school. I found a permanent position as a Geometry teacher. Go figure...!I had many challenges and many laughs being involved with young folk, they are our hope for the future. To Washington and Sacramento: "Let the floodgates of the funds pour into the three R's again. Get every student to high math and science courses from 1st grade on! WE NEED BRIGHT MINDS IN ALL TECHNOLOGICAL FIELDS:IT,ENGINEERING,SCIENCE,MEDICAL, AND INDUSTRIAL FIELDS NOW!" My husband Victor with his passion for life-long fitness, better nutrition and sports paticipation has been the driving force for developing a family of athletes. We have raised six rambunctous kids. They range in age from 45 to 22. The eldest, Manuel, is a professional chef and on his various Culinary Advisory boards to mentor young chefs. He runs, bikes, swims, and exercises daily as do his siblings:Vijay,Victoria"Junior", and Trinidad.Capt. Vijay(USMA,West Point '02), a Blackhawk pil...Expand for more
ot, is shortly to be promoted to Major, is finishing her Masters at Stanford and will be teaching Spanish and Portuguese at her Alma Mater, USMA at West Point, fall '10. 1LT. Victoria(USMA '08) is stationed at Ft. Lewis. Trindad will transfer to Cal Maritime Academy in Fall 2012, majoring in Mechanical Engineering.Bis Sis Rosiena works for USPS and lives in Denver with her 4 children and one grandchild. Orlando lives in Denver, too. I am now retired, but, tutor any student that needs help on my own time, as I always made a practice of doing. We need dedicated educators(a special brand of teachers) to inspire, guide and mentor young folk!Talk to parents, grandparents. Walk college applications through to counselors, recommending teachers, parents, college admissions doors with your students, if you have to! IT'S OUR DUTY! If you do not fit this bill, get out of the teaching profession now! Well, enough of the soapbox lecture. I hope to travel with my the love of my life...on the back of our Harley, in a van or whatever. Roughin' it just like us as young Chicano "hippie activists" back in the sweet, tumultuous '70's. BTW we have been together since 1971. Although, it's not been a bed of roses all the time...Life is "a bowl of cherries." Humor and faith gets us through some of the most difficult times. Thanks, to the Lord Almighty I am a breast cancer survivor, as is my younger sister, amazing Michele(Mechon)!I survived a life-threatening fall in 9/08 and now have a titanium replacement for the shattered vertebrae. I had to learn to walk again....I can dance better than I can walk...And, I try to focus in on the important things in life---love,faith, passion, family, true friends and neighbors! In the final analysis that's life's great lesson: LIVE, LOVE AND LAUGH! And for all you wondrous guys out there:" Cry when you need to. It's free and therapeutic!" HA! HA!
