Laura's Story

Life Oh, let's see...life just hasn't been what I thought it would be. AT ALL I've been married for 20 years to a great guy from West Virginia (yes, he has all his teeth; no he isn't inbred; no, we don't live in a mobile home). Believe it or not, I met him when I was in Basic Training for the Army. I started a career as a Social Worker, Childrens Protective Services, which I enjoyed. I even got to meet some real "hillbillys"! Ya know what? They DO have bad teeth, live in filth and have shotguns around the house. A bit scary, that, when I came to their house to check on their children. People get kinda pissed when you threaten to "take the kids". They thought that was all Social Workers did. I've also been a Real Estate Appraiser (fun job,but don't believe them. We were supposed to make the house appraise out at whatever the bank wanted to lend. If they didn't want to lend, it wouldn't appraise high enough). Because my husband is in the military, I've lived in Alabama, Georgia, Alaska, Missouri, West Virginia and Ohio. I don't like that. I would have been VERY ha...Expand for more
ppy to stay in Fair Oaks. I made it back from 99-05. Due to Multiple Sclerosis, which I was diagnosed with in 93, there was no way I could stay when my husband moved back to be near his family. So I'm stuck in Ohio, am on SSDI and can't walk very well or work. See? Life turned out to be nothing like I thought it would be. Upside, I have two great kids, Matt who's almost 17 and Amelia who's 15. Matt's damn smart...genius smart...too smart for his own good really. He aced the math portion of the PSAT and, overall, was in the 99th percentile. Nobody's gonna read this so I might as well brag. He's never had to work for his grades, so I think he has a big shock coming when he goes to University. Amelia is amazingly social. I was always shy, so she has been blowing my mind with her outgoing personality. She had better social skills (ie. being able to mix with a crowd, meet strangers etc.) at age two than I had at age 34. She's determined to become a chef. Good! It's getting hard for me to cook. when I was 28. That sucked. It pretty much limited my options in life.
