Laura's Story

Life My Spouse My husband was working his way through college as a security guard and he was working in the shopping complex where my best friend worked in an ice cream shop called "Lickity Split." I went to visit her one night and he saw me going in. He followed me into the shop and I haven't been rid of him since. We have been married now for 27 years. My husband Mohammad is from Lahore, Pakistan and we own a Limousine Service here in Fremont. We've been in business for 16 years and we're one of the few Limousine services that didn't go under after 9/11. My Pets First we have my cat "Selkett" or as I call her "Baby Girl." (I know...Baby girl isn't even short for Selkett. Selkett is her official name.) She is a domestic shorthair that is totally black with big yellow green eyes. She spend her day pulling pieces of cat food out of her bowl and batting it all over the kitchen until she loses it, then she goes back for another piece. I have to sleep on my back all night as her favorite place to sleep is on my chest. Since the writing of this, I have acquired two more cats. Yes, I know...I'm going to be that "crazy cat lady down the street" that everyone talks about. I don't deny it. I can't help it...I love cats. First we have Gwen or as I call her "Gwennie." Gwennie is quite unique. She's white with black spots, but that's not what makes her unique. She's polydactal...or you might have heard of them being called "Hemingway's." In other words, she has more than the customary five toes on each front paw. She not only has one ...Expand for more
extra toe, she has two. So she has seven toes on each front paw. She looks almost as if she has thumbs...almost as if she has two paws on each leg. How that for unique? Our other cat is Panther, but we call him Baby. He is also totally black (I have a thing for black cats) and has big green eyes. I found Baby in the bushes outside our house. His mother had abandoned him. He was so little that his eyes had just barely opened, he had no teeth, and he couldn't walk yet. I went and got infant formula for kittens and bottles and had to bottle feed him. As he got older, as a kitten, he would climb up the front of my clothes until he could sit on my chest and suck on my bottom lip and "make bread" on my cheeks. He is now three years old, but he still sees Mohammad and I as "mommy and daddy." If you would like to see Baby, take a look in my pictures. I've included a picture of him. In the picture, he opened my towel cabinette all by himself and was just sitting there, that's why I took the picture. My Kids Our son's name is Nathan James Khan and he just turned 25 this last January. He is a MIP (Male Involvement Program) Peer Health Educator for the Tri City Health Clinic here in Fremont. What he does is that he's part of a team of individuals that go into the schools and do presentations for the student and faculty about abstinence and using condoms. This program is designed to help cut down on the amount of teen pregnancies and the spread of ST D's like Aid's. It's very important work that he's doing and we're very proud of him.
