Laurence's Story
Workplace
After graduating from Tech I worked for the phone company and then Uncle Sam told me he needed me. I became a U.S. Army Military Police Officer and stayed in the Army Reserves until 1976. In 1970 I became a Police Officer reaching the rank of Lieutenant. I received the Medal of Valor, Officer of the Year (only command officer to ever receive this award). I was very involved with community groups during my entire police career. After 27 years I retired from the P.D. and took a position as Chief of Police for a College District. I worked there for five years, it was a very enriching experience. I started a cadet program, placed 65 men and women in law enforcement agencies, 5 in Oakland. I also continued my community work volunteering as a committee member for the Children's Network and eventually being named Vice President. college and police work to enter the private sector. I am currently the Worldwide Director of Security for a large computer company with offices in 62 countries and 25 states. It is a rewarding retirement job that keeps me busy on an average of 90-100 hours a week. Seven years ago I started a part time job to keep me out of trouble. I took over security at a large sporting venue for their clubs and suites. This is my second job where I relax and meet old classmates, I have about 30 off-duty or retired police officers that work with me. During my years as a police officer I also owned and operated several businesses. I attribute all of my blessings, that are people and work related, to growing up in Oakland. I am a die hard Oakland fan and still active in community service work. I will retire a second time maybe in the next 25 years when I get bored. We have choices, and my choice is to work hard, be happy, and be greatful for the life I have and the people that give it value.
