Laurie's Story
Following high school, I attended the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley where I received a degree in Elementary Education and Special Education for the Hearing Impaired. Having taught for a year, I then went to nursing school at Porter Memorial Hospital in Denver to become an LPN. I worked at Mercy Hospital 4 ½ years. After Brian McGuire and I divorced, I married my “true soul mate” in 1980. We celebrate our 42nd anniversary this year! My husband’s career in private equity resulted in us living in Colorado, Wyoming, California, Texas, Washington and Alabama. My life has revolved around our family and our church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I loved being a stay-at-home mom raising our four incredible children (two girls and two boys). doing weekly "Storytime With Nony", where I read to our grands for an hour each over Skype; church humanitarian service; and traveling with my husband in our retirement. Some of our favorite trips, in no particular order, are dog-sledding in minus 35 degree weather in Minnesota; snowmobiling in Yellowstone; the beaches, sunsets, and Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawaii; the magnificent grandeur of the Grand Canyon; the peaceful beauty of Glacier National Park in Montana; the breath-taking roar of Niagara Falls; the Southern charm of Savannah, Georgia; the history of Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia; the incredible artwork of Florence, Italy; and the whole country of Finland, where I learned exactly how my Finnish ancestors lived during the 1800's and experienced the Midsummer Celebration with their seaside bonfires and flower-laden maypoles. I LOVE life, experiencing other cultures, and all of the glory of nature!!
