Laurel's Story
Life
I spent several years bouncing back and forth between Denver/Boulder and Chicago, and have been back in Colorado for about 8 years now. I'm married with 1 stepson (19) and 1 son (7).
The older one is spending a year with CityYear, a Peace Corps-type program, which allows him to tutor inner city children and provide a positive role model. He reports that it is an eye opener and a lot harder than he thought, but he loves the work, the organization, and the independence of living on his own in Ohio.
The younger one attends the same school where my husband teaches, so they get to spend a lot of time together, both everyday and going to football games and so forth. They are also very involved in TaeKwon Do.
I think we can all agree that I was never athletic, so I am grateful that my job schedule and my lengthy commute do not allow for more than a supportive position in their activities. We all enjoy activities like the scho...Expand for more
ol fundraisers and plays, though.
I commute to Denver, working for a large financial services company, overseeing a portfolio of real estate investments. It's a crazy time in the business right now, but the environment is great, and I really enjoy the work. Now if we could only move the whole enterprise south about 50 miles!
We try to do a little traveling each year. It's all been domestic so far, since there's so much to see here at home that it seems a good place to start. We are looking forward to a possible trip to Toronto next year, which we hope to manage in conjunction with a trip to see my sister and her family in NY.
Anyway, it's your basic decent life. Nothing really on the fringes, good or bad, just a standard life with some great kids and a loving husband. Parenthood, which I'd put off so long, is both much more rewarding and much more challenging than I would have imagined, as I think every parent would agree.
