Lavar's Story

4 days outta hi-skool, I went to work as a Gov'ment Mule in Spring '88; been here ever since. You do the math; I'm not very good at it. ;) Now for some Story Wizard ideas... What I always wanted to be once all grown up? A 6-footer. My family and friends thought that was a novel idea. As it turns out, they were indifferent. Best way to relax after coming home from a long day at work is to lock the door behind me, turn off the phones, eat some dinner and vegetate in front o'the TV. Wildest thing I remember doing in school was ditching classes. Yes; I was lame back then...and not much as changed. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have coffee, personal space and more of it to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My hero used to be the "MacGuyver" character. He could do anything, just like that Professor from "Gilligan's Island" but without the island. I've lived in The SFV all my life: Burbank, Sun Valley, Arleta, Pacoima. Still in Canoga Park because rent is so cheap. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is my father, who died in 1990, because we'd have a lot more to talk about now than when I was young. I'm into NFL Football; spend most Fall & Winter Sundays in front of TVs and rooting for The Green Bay Packers. Am also a Dodger fan, due to being born & raised in L.A. as a member to my family filled with Dodger fans. And more recently, I've gotten into classic muscle cars; been attending shows & cruise nights since 2005. My biggest surprise in Life could be that I'm still employed with the same Gov'ment agency. I've put up with them (and they've tolerated me) for over two decades! If I could improve my home, I'd remodel almost everything and add on a few more windows for natural light. My dream home would be a house near the beach--or at least overlooking the ocean. I've learned enough about kids (largely through being one) to know they are NOT for me. And to insure I never become a parent, had a vasectomy! Ms. Mary Rawn-Peterson is the teacher I'd most like to see again, because she was a cool, easy-going presence in an era when I was starting to become more aware of the world, while at the same time it became more accepting of me as an individual. Stupid Story Wizard Answer #14: I won't ever win $100 million; stop teasing me! I've never lived in a dorm--or went to college. I have driven by many a campus, though. Being "truly happy" might come after winning that fictional $100-million, moving with my girlfriend up the California coast to a smallish beach town and not having any financial concerns for the rest o'my life. I'm now into my 40s. At age 12, I thought that people my age now would be something different. I was so completely naive. To be honest, I didn't really ponder it all that much. Not working hard; just doing enough to stay employed. I suppose my only real career "aspiration" is to remain employed at this job into my late-60s so as to insure a comfortable(?) retirement. Guess that all depends on the next stock market recession/crash. My first BIG crush is happily married with children and doing quite well. I shall forever wish her all the best. My best friend would tell you I'm Bruce Willis, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as quiet, secretive, mysterious or just plain moody. I have no style. Unless you consider...Expand for more
dressing in Levi's, T-shirts and sneakers a "style." Mine is a practical nature; getting dressed up just doesn't fit into my way of living. Got no time for "fancy." Weirdest job I ever had was workin' security for a private party, hosted by smut peddlers who film porn geared towards urban audiences. The afternoon/evening started as an awards show, then devolved into Lap Dance Central with the male dancers tantalizing female patrons. Earned myself a whole $60 for half a day's work. And, no; I would not do that again. I don't share my home with anyone--no family members, roommates, pets or even plants--which is a preferrable way to live. My girlfriend does spend the occasional weekend, however. There are a few trophies in my possession. Most of 'em were my Dad's, who raced cars in the 1950s & early '60s. I recently took home a Summer 2009 trophy for my softball team's division title (because no one else wanted it); still, it is a nice way to remember my first season in the L.A. County's Valley Softball League. The only other trophy that's mine is from the Summer '82 softball league I played in, where ALL the kids received "participation trophies" at the end o'the season. I guess it is kind of like that printed certificate ya get at the end of a job-related training class. Stupid Story Wizard answer #25: If I had one do-over, and chose to do something differently, it would probably be: MY ENTIRE LIFE. I've answered that question the same way, year after year, every time hearing it. In 10 years, I hope to be alive & kicking. If I'm going to get there at all, it will be by being smart (and lucky!). Or at least less dumb than how I've been thus far. My oldest friend is TOBY; we've been best friends more than half our lives. First met in January 1986 on CPHS' campus. I didn't think much of him at first; but he grew on me. He has always possessed a sense of loyalty that can only be noticed over time; and thankfully I became aware of it. In about a year (me being only 16 and not very sharp). By January '87, we were best friends; and by hanging out a lot both at & away from school, we got to know each other really well. Even though we have differences of opinion at times, we've never fought; our friendship has always been stronger than that. Stupid Story Wizard answer #28: what might surprise everyone at my high school reunion the most would be that I just don't care about the same things others habitually obsess over. In fact, I don't even care to explain myself further. My first job was Fall 1985 at Sub In The Sand, a sandwhich shop within a stripmall that replaced a Jack In The Box location across from Sutter Jr. High School. Mostly passed out flyers to advertise for said business. What I remember most about it is the one time they were seriously short-handed and recruited me to help make sandwiches. I was SO under qualified. A childhood memory I'll never forget: being four years old, and having most of my family with me at the house we lived in just off Burbank Blvd in the city of Burbank. All of us were on the back porch in the early evening of July 4, 1974 to watch a fireworks show taking place at the foot o'the Verdugo Hills. Can't remember much of the show, itself; but really dug having so many family members all around me at my home. I thought it should/would happen more often; but it didn't.
