Lawrence's Story

Life ---- Single Electrical/Computer Engineer. Looking to reestablish ties with old classmates. Had a great time at the SWC'86 20 Year Reunion. Now living in Manhattan, Kansas. Workplace ------------- Now working in a cubicle in the basement of Hale Library at Kansas State University as a Senior Unix Systems Administrator, for the EST group for central ITS. What a cool place this is...actually it is kind of cold. Nice when its 100 outside. OTOH, it can get really hot sometimes....like whenever there's a nice day during the winter or they run hot water into the chilled water feed to the datacenter. Come visit me, I still need a life.... Where have you lived? Why did you move? ---------------------------------------------------- I was born in Lawrence, Kansas, because my parents met while they were graduate students at KU. They moved to Calgary, Alberta before I was 2. So I grew up in Calgary and was there until I graduated from the University of Calgary and got my first job in Medicine Hat, Alberta in 1990. I was laid off in 1997, and after a brief stay in parents' basement in 1998 I moved to Dublin, OH to work for a software company. 5 weeks after I started, it was acquired by a Canadian company. I was laid off in 2005. I was invited by someone in a message board to apply for a job at Kansas State University (in Manhattan, KS). After the long search process, I started working there as a Unix System Administrator in July 2006. In March 2011, I was promoted to Senior Unix System Administrator. quent hires have involved search processes of almost a year, hopefully it won't take that long to fill the two vacancies from last summer. No word on filling the vacancy from several years ago. Someday I should visit Lawrence, Kansas where it all began. -- If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the bathroom and add on a soundproof room where I can't hear or feel my neighbors. My dream home would be a huge mansion with complicated and secret passages or a TARDIS. If I won $100 million, I'd give a good chunk of it to medical research in the fields that have affected me personally, then spend the rest on home, electronics, computers and travel. My current age is 42. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be serious and boring. I was so completely wrong. In 10 years, I hope to be still doing the same thing I am now. I'm going to get there by surviving the workplace politics? -- What happened to your first crush? ------------------------------------------- She's married to a guy I knew through the BBS I ran and later met at UofC Engineering.... What I wonder is what's up with my locker partner who once gave her flowers with a card saying they were from me.... Talk about your oldest friend -- how you met and why you clicked. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We met in kindergarten, or was it preschool. And continued to go to the same schools... We had wild imaginations and could share in the same imaginary situations or worlds during recess and afterschool....
