Lawrence's Story
Life
After leaving High School,I joined the Navy. I went to the Naval Training Center I Great Lakes, Il. where I learned the air conditioning and refrigeration trade. I was then assigned to a troop transport ship, the USS Gen. Wm. Mitchell, on which I made 21 West Pac. cruises (about 250,000 miles). I left that ship in 1965 and was asssigned to the USS Henery B. Wilson DDG7, a guided missle destroyer. On the Wilson, I saw duty in Viet Nam. I left active duty in 1966 and joined the active reserve. I hired in with Pacific Telephone in 1967 as an Air Conditioning Mechanic. I was promoted to management (a big mistake) in 1975. After the break-up of the Bell System (you remember that, the world's greatest telephone company) I suffered severe heart problems, mostly related to stress, and took an early retirement in 1988. I met my wife, Bonnie, at the Telephone Company. At this writing, we've been married 28 years. We have 2 wonderfull sons. I now own a Disc Jockey Company, which I love. I plan on full retirement at 62. Bonnie and I love to go on cruises. I also love off-roading, and go as often as I can. My parents sold their house on Cloyden Road, just up from the High School in 1971, and moved to Waldport, Oregon, where they enjoyed fishing and retirement until my dad died in 1999. My mom is still up there in a rest home(she refuses to leave). All in all, I've had a great ...Expand for more
life, and have few regrets.
Update September 29. 2003
Wow, how quickly things change. My mother passed away August 4th, which has left me devestated. Being parentless is humbling to say the least. My wife, Bonnie, is helping me through this tough time. We have not changed our plans to cruise the South Pacific in February, but instead have added a side trip to Fiji. We are now considering moving out of California, possibly southern Oregon or Colorado. More to follow.
Update October 20, 2011
Holy crap, how things have changed again, yet not changed. I retired just one month after the last writing, at age 60. Bonnie and I decided to stay put. We have now lived in our home for 28 years, and as of this writing, have been married 36 years. Our first son, Jeremy is happily married,(no kids yet), and our son, Robert is engaged. I developed Valley Fever a couple of years ago and had to give up off roading. I joined Kiwanis and do a lot of volunteer chairity work in the community.I gave up the disc jockey business, but still play a monthly dance for the mentally challenged. I started a band called "Still In Tune". We play mostly at the Senior Center and Retirement Homes, and are having a blast. Bonnie and I bought a motorhome and have traveled the western U.S. extensively with our two Dashchunds, Betty Boop and Lacy. My sister, Carolyn lives with her husband in Parker, Colorado.
