Lawrence Dugan:

CLASS OF 1969

Lawrence's Story

Its been a long but interesting road. I spent the last 35 years working as a fish and wildlife biologist in Alaska. Currently retired in northwestern Montana. Went to Prudue Univerisity and Colorado State. Finally found some old friends recently, most notably - Chuck Stanley. Had the opportunity to visit him in Ohio this past summer. Also talked to Pat Gordon. We went to grade school in Pullman. They also are retired. Pat lives in the Chicago area and Chuck in Holland Ohio. I am very proud of the accomplishments they both made. Chuck, Pat, and I had great times at the Mendel dances and home comings. Still remember cruising my muscle car on Michigan Ave. As for me, I've worked for several state fish and game agencies and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Early years I spent my time as a field biologist flying around in heliocopters and running river boats. Later years in project management both in the public and private sector. Got caught up in the draft and went into the Navy in 1971. Spent two tours in Viet Nam. Now living in Bigfork, MT in a custom home we designed and constructed. nths with a tool belt constructing our retirement home. Best job I ever had but wouldn't do it again. Went back to Alaska in 2004 and worked as a consultant for several of the major oil companies. For the most part managed to keep them on the straight and narrow. I retired in 2010. I have been married for 30 years to Kathleen. We met in Alaska on the same Fish and Game project. Life has been very good to us. At times the road developing our carreers was very difficult, especially dealing with the politics of science and moving alot to advance my work. I quickly found that science alone does not always triumph. There is always some politician inserting themselves in things they have very little knowledge of. Bottom line, I was outspoken as a biologist and always pushed for protection and scientific based management of our fish resources. At times this got me in hot water. But so what, at least I can sleep at night knowing I did the right thing. Today, I spend my time finishing develepment of our 12 acre property and fly fishing. Staring in 2015, I plan to spend my summers fly fishing Montana and Yellowstone Park. .
