Lawrence (Larry)'s Story
After graduation from Chino High, headed to UC San Diego and graduated (BA Biology) in '75. Married Denise in '76 (still married!) and we moved to Boston for my graduate training. MS and PhD at Boston University from 76-84. We headed back across country to UC Davis and I spent 4 years there in postdoctoral research. Accepted a faculty position at Indiana University in 1988 and was there until I retired at the end of 2017. My work at IU was focused on bone biology and I spent time working with NASA prior to Space Station when we were evaluating the effect of microgravity on bone. I gradually moved into the the discipline of ethics over the years and from 2001-17, I directed the ethics component of the DDS curriculum. cal during 2011-12 doing fellowship work in clinical ethics and graduate work in philosophy and bioethics. Prior to retiring, I split my time between the School of Dentistry and the Fairbanks Center for Medical Ethics at IU Health Methodist Hospital.
We began our move from Indiana in mid 2017 now live in the Puget Sound region of Western Washington. In addition to consulting on profession education curricula and ethics, I still teach about once a month, now at the University of Washington. I’m an avid sea kayaker and I sculpt, carve and turn wood.
Some family still lives in and around Upland, so once in a while we visit and I'm able to drive through the old neighborhood and think about the wonderful times there. I look forward to hearing "voices from the past"...drop a note if you'd like.
