Lawrence's Story
Life
Umm.. let's see..Where to begin..(ahem) Being an awkward misfit (to put it somewhat mildly, of course -smile) throughout high school, ironically enough, had some considerable benefits. First of all, it enabled me to better understand another side of people from a relatively safe distance. I recognize now that I was extremely fortunate in meeting and, in some cases, actually befriending some truly wonderful people (students, teachers, and coaches alike). Unfortunately, it took me several years to overcome a crippling social phobia and its concomitant health effects. I do regret now that my shyness and odd behavior may have been misconstrued by some terrific people that I genuinely liked and respected. But forgoing the conventional pharmaceutical and "self- medicating" paths that many others have resorted to, I immersed myself in a rigorous health and fitness regimen to gain some confidence and improve my appearance as much as possible. There's not too many 20 year-old athletes right now that have my dichotomy of stamina and strength. (Athletically speaking, I do all us old, bald guys quite proud; I'm happy to say.) As a matter of fact, a confrontation I had with a "nerd-hater" served as a catalyst for my lifelong diet and workout program (i.e. I came oh-so-close to getting my ass kicked by a gir...Expand for more
l during freshman year. Decinta Higgins, if you're out there, I want to THANK YOU sweety!!!!! -smile). Furthermore, a terrific and very understanding circle of family and close friends have enabled me to mature (almost) to the point of normalcy (smile). But I've come to appreciate the notion that it's far better to be a little strange and different than to be forgettably nondescript. There are PLENTY of intelligent, highly successful, beautiful people that have yet to find something that drives their most innate passions. Although I am lamentably NOT one of these aforementioned individuals by a long shot (smile), I am and feel I always will be driven to write and train with everything I've got. That's something no one or nothing can take away from me. Whether you're driven to run, lift, teach, play golf, and/or simply be a great spouse and/or parent, just do it without second-guessing how others perceive you or what you're missing out on by making personal sacrifices. If nothing else, use pettiness and derision as fuel to sublimate into becoming better, and in turn, becoming much happier. Currently, I work at a proverbial dead-end job with rather mediocre pay, but I wouldn't trade my family, friends, and writing and training endeavors for all the world (or even a top CEO's severance package). God bless!!!
