Lawrence's Story

Life As it is said "Life is what happens while you are making plans". I feel like I am still on a treadmill. I graduated from UC Irvine, "Go Anteaters", where I was an All-American in track and field and we won an NCAA National Championship. I married and went to San Francisco for 10 years to train as an Orthopedic Surgeon. I had 3 boys by then and moved to a group practice in Santa Cruz . I spent time in Iraq in 1990 and 1991 and jumped out of planes for the Army. In 1994 my group began to sell out to a hostile take over, which I led the fight against. Needless to say I lost, and needed to look elsewhere to earn a living. I ended up in Tennessee where Medicine is even more corrupt. However God had plans for me. I did the unheard of and started a Solo Practice. There wasn't much money so my wife of 24 years divorced me, and then I found the Right woman. We married in 2003 and now I have two more boys to raise. I developed (with others) a new way to do knee replacements on an outpatient basis requireing no rehabilitation. Being a "foreigner" in The South where medicine is about 30 years behind these new ideas generally keep me shunned by my colleagues. I am busy as can be with patients coming from all over the United States for me to do their surgery. I do about 8 a week of these procedures and virtually all of my patients are referred by other patients. I am Chief of Surgery at Delta Medical Center in Memphis. my practice and we are growing and now building our own office building. I have done several local and PBS TV shows and have a good internet site. I have continued to work out, and besides the common recreational sports I restarted competition in Track and Field. My first year I was 2nd at the National Masters Championship in the Hammer Throw, this year I won the Championship in Hawaii. Kathy and I Honeymooned in Puerto Rico in 2003 where I competed in the World Championships and placed 7th in the Hammer and 10th in the Discus Throw (romantic isn't it). This year we went to Spain for the World Championships and I placed 4th in the 35 pound weight throw (missed the bronze by 4 inches) and 8th in the Hammer and Discus. Recently I have won National titles in the Weight, Superweight, and 300 pound Ultraweight Throws, there are a few powerlifting titles as well. During the Summer I generally train for track and Wakeboard, and in the Winter I am learning to Snowboard, I can't Snowski any more since my knee is very arthritic. I love cars and have a great collection in my mind. My remaining boys attend Christian school. Davis is in 7th grade and was the star running back in football ( they start tackle football in third grade in Tennessee). Griffin is in third grade and is playing Basketball. Looks like I'll be about 60 when the kids are on their own. If I can I'll try and get to the reunion if my Boss will give me the time off.
