Lawrence's Story
After securing a BA in English, minor in Journalism, I worked for a time on a couple of newspapers; I was an aggressive freelance writer in my 20's. I went on to teach ESL (English as a Second Language) overseas for a few years, but turned down a full-time position in Korea because I was tired of traveling.
From 1993 - 2007 I was the owner of used/rare bookstore. Being an independent businessman is one of the greatest freedoms in the world, but it's a lot of work. Finally, I closed my open store and put my inventory online to give myself more breathing space. As an online entrepreneur, I sell rare books through Advanced Book Exchange, a subsidiary of Amazon.com.
In April of 2001, I married a longtime girlfriend, but the marriage didn't work, and we divorced in September of '04. As of 2012, I have been dating an attractive banking executive.
In 2005 I published my first book of poetry, titled, "Standing Apart", and did several public readings, to general applause. I'm now at work on my second collection of prose and verse, tentatively titled, "Notes From Overhead". In August, 2012, my poem, Urban Decay, was listed as a Finalist in the Faulkner Literary Contest in New Orleans, LA.
In the summer of 2012 I queried a midwest publisher with sample chapters of my first novel, and was rewarded with a very positive response. In September they received my complete manuscript, and six weeks later I was told that it was accepted! The book will be ...Expand for more
published in early 2013. I am already half-finished with my second novel, and am now working on a series of Young Adult mysteries. I am thrilled by the fact that I have made the transition from "writer" to "author".
For the last several years I've been working as a substitute teacher around the San Francisco Bay Area. The students are always a bit intimidated by my size, but I let them call me "Mr. B.", which always makes them smile. Teaching is a tough business, but it is very rewarding. To further my work, I have recently earned a Masters Degree in Education.
To stay fit, I now practice weightlifting, as well as Yoga. The workouts are never easy, but they keep me in shape. My diet is quite restrictive now, too, and I've recently eliminated gluten, dairy, and processed sugar from my daily intake, for weight-control purposes. While this might sound like a harsh diet, I have lost 15 pounds in six weeks and doubled my performance rates; I think I'm on to something!
When I'm not teaching or writing, I'm frequently cooking. I've become quite a good cook, and recently produced a shrimp and wild rice casserole, to great reviews! During the holidays I often show up at family gatherings with coffee cakes, cookies, or homemade gingerbread. My girlfriend loves it when I show up with something new.
High school was a great time in my life, and college was even better. If there's anyone out there with a memory of me you'd like to share, send it in.
