Layne's Story
Life
After high school, I went to the Univ. of Puget Sound for 2 years and lived awhile as an independent, then joined a sorority (Tri Delt), enjoying the best of both worlds. I transferred to the Univ. of Washington to pursue a major in speech pathology, rooming for awhile with a friend from high school (Rena Bates). It was there that I met my husband, Rick, although it was quite awhile before we got married. I finished my B.S. mid-year, so worked for a few months as a receptionist at the Northwest Kidney Center. I then moved to San Diego to get my master's at SDSU. After 3 yrs., I moved back up here, married Rick, and finally finished my research. However, a lot had gone on at SDSU (burnout, disillusion), and I never went into the speech field. Instead, I ended up teaching fitness classes (senior fitness, weight training, aerobics - who? Layne?) at a couple of YMCA's for 4 yrs. It was great, but tiring, so changed jobs and worked for a couple of years at the Episcopal Book Store. Loved that. Finally had a successful pregnancy and now have a 16-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy. Shelby goes to Seattle Prep, and Alex goes to Explorer West. Sang for 13+ years with the Seattle Symphony Chorale, until our big blow-out with them in 1997 (for those of you who read about it in the paper), took a year off, then joined the Seattle Bach Choir, and sang with them for a few years. My dad died in 2000 and my mom in 2005. Rick has worked for King County for 24 years, so we'll probably stay in the area. He's a legislative analyst, specializing in land use/growth management issues, for the Metro/KC Council. We finally sold our "starter house" in 2001 and bought an "old house." That kept us busy for awhile, but life caught up, so there are a lot of "someday" projects around here. Am a Girl Scout Advisor for my daughter's troop. Have been involved with that since they starte...Expand for more
d when she was in first grade. This year is their last year as a troop, with five girls left. 3 will be graduating in 2009.
College
Went to Univ. of Puget Sound directly after high school. Lived in a sorority (Delta Delta Delta) there. After 2 years, decided to major in speech pathology and transferred to the Univ. of Washington. Roomed with Rena Bates. Finished B.S. in March 1979. Moved to Southern California for grad. school in 1980. Attended San Diego State and finished M.A. in speech path. Moved back to Washington state at the end of 1982 and have lived here ever since.
Workplace
After I left San Diego State, I finally finished my research and got my M.S. in speech pathology. However, by then I was pretty burned out and disillusioned by some of my experiences, not to mention a serious lack of self-confidence. When husband lost his job shortly after we were married (before I finished my M.A., we both went to work at a die casting factory just to make money for rent and food. I didn't last very long sitting all day drilling holes through the same part. Fortunately, Rick got upgraded there, then finally went to work for the county in an area related to his previous area of expertise. I went to work from 1985 to 1988 at the West Seattle YMCA teaching fitness classes (aerobics, senior fitness, weight training) and found that being lousy at P.E. doesn't mean that you can't succeed at fitness! Left there after getting somewhat burned out, and worked from 1989 to 1991 at the Episcopal Book Store. Really enjoyed that - did a bit of everything as there were only three of us employees. Management changed, though, and they needed my hours, so I left there and happily had a successful pregnancy (after trying for four years). Started working in 2004 as a reading tutor in the Seattle Public Schools, which I love doing. Am now tutoring at Our Lady of Guadalupe School.
