Lee's Story

Funny how certain moments define us. My avenue of escape from my terrible shyness was music, and the expression of my intuitive nature seemed well-received by those around me. One particular incident comes to mind. I was always a part of any stage band or symphony that Mr. Zimmerman led, and this was at a rehearsal for Mr. Crane of Sleepy Hollow. We had stellar talent throughout the band that year. Remember how they had to re-write the script to leave out the reference to unmarried pregnancy? That was my first experience of "Dumbing Down America". A long break period came up for the band as the adults sorted things out, and Dan M. and I headed for the boys room, taking our trombones with us. We were so bored with the listless score for our parts...Expand for more
. Then we noted the small echo that came off the tiled walls, and put our lips to 'bones' and let the magic happen. We were playing off off each other, and to the echoing sounds off the walls. Just opened our minds to the universe and let it flow - sweet, soft, sensual jazz improv in 4 parts by two youngsters. When we figured enough time had passed (it hadn't) we settled back into our current space and time and headed out the door. There we were met by a dozen or so astonished kids, who had been listening for some time. One of them asked who else was in there and were floored to find out it was just the two of us. Two and a half years later I was 1-A before graduation with a draft number of 163 for the vietnam War. Boy, was that a game-changer.
