Lee's Story

As I drove through the guard portal at work, the guard remarked as he waved me by, “Living a dream...”. I thought about that and my mind was flooded with memories and thoughts of my life so far. The fire in our house in Imperial Beach, the death of my dad and my mom raising 5 boys and 1 girl. Growing up without a dad was tough yet I realized later that even through those difficult times in our lives, God is working for His good. Many who knew me in school know that I was very shy and I didn’t have one of those outgoing personalities. I wasn’t a brainiac nor an athlete, just another student in the crowd. Then there was the NAVY... I made some bad decisions in my life but joining the NAVY in 1985 wasn’t one of them. It gave me the training, discipline and education that I needed in life. Of course, the NAVY sent me faraway from home. To Great Lakes, Orlando, Idaho Falls and finally to Norfolk. Served on the USS South Carolina for the remainder of my time. Afterwards, in 1991 I began working at ORNL as a Reactor Operator. Selfishness and stubbornness resulted in more difficulties and a broken marriage. I certainly wasn’t living a dream. God won’t work with a hardened heart, it needs to be broken. It needs to be changed. A hard heart is filled with pride and arrogance and a broken heart is humbled and willing. I gave my life to the Lord and He started molding me and using me for His purpose. He ...Expand for more
blessed me with a godly woman, Candy, and we raised our kids. Then we were empty nesters. Living a dream? God tells us, “My plans aren’t your plans, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord...”. I went to India on a mission trip sharing the Gospel and I believed He wanted me to serve as a missionary in India but that wasn’t the plan. India only opened my eyes to the problems of the world. In 2009, Candy and I were called to the mission field in Guatemala. We resigned from our jobs, sold our house and belongings and took that step of faith. We served in a children’s home and we took care of, loved, ministered and discipled boys ages 8-15. We started out at 24 boys and was as high as 72. God gives us what we can handle, right? I look back and see His hand in my life as growing up without a father to being a father to many boys who did not have one. We served for 8 years and during that time, God blessed us with a precious gift. A little girl that was abandoned and we eventually adopted. Difficulties crashed upon us as Candy was diagnosed with cancer, our mothers went home to the Lord and we realized that God was closing the door and sending us back to the states. In 2018, God gave me back the job I gave up to serve Him and we settled down here in Tennessee. No longer empty nesters but blessed. Am I living the dream? I believe the correct statement is that I am blessed and living in His will.
