Lee's Story

I joined the MN National Guard while still in high school and went to basic training the fall of 1981. After basic training I returned to Marshall and did Restaurant Management until April of 1985. I met my wife while working for Brad Piehl at Ed's Pizza/Earth II. She was attending Southwest State. We met on Halloween night 1983, were engaged by Thanksgiving of that same year and were married the Friday after Thanksgiving (November 23rd) 1984. In April 1985 I went into the Army full time and Ann and I moved to Ft. Carson in Colorado Springs, CO. We really enjoyed being there. There was so much to see and do. I do not recall a single weekend that we didn't drive somewhere as tourists. We were there until mid-October 1986 when I was transferred to Schofield Barracks on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. This was a great place to be for about, oh, 3 months. Being from Minnesota neither Ann or I were sun worshipers and had no desire to lay on the beach and work on our tans. Because Oahu is so small there really isn't that much to see or do. We did enjoy the weather the first year we were there but the second winter really bummed us out. The temperature change from summer and winter is about 8 degrees. All the trees, grass, bushes, flowers, etc. stay ...Expand for more
the same (green). If you add the lack of weather change and extremely small island to the locals attitude toward servicemen and women it was not our cup of tea. If you were military personnel and did not have a tourist dollar in your hand the locals either completely ignored you or treated you poorly. I am not sure I could count the number of times a local Hawaiian told me to "Go back to the Mainland where I belonged. This was their island." Keep in mind that native Hawaiians are now the minority in Hawaii. The majority of the population are Filipino and Samoan. We moved back to Minnesota in 1988 and relocated to the Twin Cities. I continued Restaurant Management until 1999 when I changed professions and began doing Software Development (which I am still doing). Ann and I had two children, Joshua was born in August 1989 and Sierra arrived in May 1996. Ann is a Human Resources Benefit Specialist and has been at Upsher-Smith Labs in Maple Grove for close to nineteen years. That's about it. I enjoy woodworking, smoking (beef brisket, ribs, roasts, etc. not Marlboro's), beer brewing, wine fermenting, mead fermenting and reading. My favorite authors are Stephen King, Dean Kontz and John Sandford. I also enjoy watching or listening to the Twins.
