Leilani's Story
Okay, I have already done this, but it's on my profile page, and I guess it is supposed to be here. Went to San Diego State, but , I was hired by United as a campus rep. I was supposed to interview student candidates for United as a screening process. I went to training in Chicago, and after six weeks, got my wings - ta da!- anyway, started to fly and immediately went from student to stewardess. Never did get back to San Diego State. I really loved the job.
In 1967 it was wonderful, great layovers( 27 hours in New Orleans), good pay ( not great, but adequate), fun people to work with, passengers who had to PAY to fly. We spent two days on how to handle furs, hats, and soft garment bags that went in the open overhead rack. No carry on bags, no 80 pound garment bags, no trash, either carry on, or in the seats. It was expensive to fly, and the passengers reflected that. Everyone dressed up to fly, no jogging shorts without a jock strap, no bare feet, no one in curlers, the greyhound bus people were still on the bus.
Anyway, did that for about a year, then got homesick, and quit The United for good old PSA. What a change!! Every flight was a party, got to wear the ruffled orange pettipants, under the green dress. Then we went to hot pants, and high heeled boots. WOW! Then it was really fun, no food, but wh...Expand for more
at a view for the mostly male passengers.!
Did that for five years, and made the dumbest decision of my life. Quit flying for an office job. Eventually moved to Colorado Springs, married my best friend - an Air Force officer, and it has been a wonderful 39 years.
To my great surprise, in 1977 got a notice that United was looking for me. The Supreme Court said the airline had discriminated against all of us who wanted to marry. Serendipity stepped in my life, seems my supervisor had marked my separation form from United as "quitting to get married". What a perfect error; they had to rehire me, if I wanted the job. Back pay to 1967, all of that lovely seniority back, etc. anyway by 1988, I was flying again. Spent as much time off as I could. Flew out of Chicago for about three months, transfer to Denver ( home) came through, and boy, had the job changed!
We moved to McLean, VA, John was now a " beltway" bandit, making career moves here and there. My transfer to DC took a couple of months. East coast very different from the west. Anyway flew long enough to retire with 33 years, and we retired to Phoenix. That brings us to 2015, and a 50th high school reunion. We plan on being there, in Santee.Really looking forward to seeing as many of you, canes, walkers and wheel chairs included, as can make it.
