Leland's Story
Life
I live in the hills overlooking San Francisco Bay and occasionally get a chance to still visit North Highlands where I take care of my parent's old house.
After graduating from Highlands, I spent 4 years each in the following cities pursuing my goals.... Santa Cruz, New York City and Los Angeles before finally returning to NorCal in 1982.
I've been keeping very busy with my practice in pediatric dentistry and also volunteer at a pediatric health clinic for low income kids.
Reflecting back on high school, I now regret that I wasn't more active socially (didn't develop too many friendships until after I left North Highlands). I hope that all of my former classmates are doing well. It was a brief but special period of youth and innocence that we shared together.
College
Received my bachelors degree from University of California at Santa Cruz. Then left the beautifu...Expand for more
l redwood forest and laid back beaches for the hustle and bustle of New York City and Columbia University, College of Dental Medicine. Then left Ivy League tradition and cold winters for casual and sunny Southern California at UCLA. I met my wife at Martin Luther King General Hospital where I did my residency.
We moved back up to Northern California in 1982.
Workplace
My first job was mowing lawns in the neighborhood. My second job was picking tomatoes. That was during my senior year at Highlands when I was running track and in pretty good shape. But that was still HARD work. I earned 8 dollars for the whole day and was exhausted! I learned to respect those who work in our fields on a daily basis. I never returned to the fields again.While in college,scholarships helped but I still tutored and washed dishes to pay the bills.Those early jobs have taught me to appreciate what I have now.
