Leland's Story

Life Other than close friends, not too many people knew that I wore a uniform in the MT National Guard for 3 years while we were in highschool.I was married in 1958 and have 3 great Daughters,I worked around Missoula doing most every thing there was to do in those days, to include a little self employment. After being divorced in 1989,an opportunity came up for me to volunteer for active duty in the Army Special Forces as a 1st Lieutnant.I jumped at the chance and never looked back. For the next 22 years I lived in 7 states, and 5 countries. I participated in Viet Nam twice, Grenada, Panama, the Middle East, and was leader of a MIA recovery team in South East Asia.I progressed steadily in rank and experience commanding every thing from platoons to a Battalion, and on the way recieved many awards and decorations.(see Military)My wife of 20 years, Josie and I retired in 1991 and moved back to Beautiful Montana to settle in the Blackfoot Valley. My time is taken up working in my shop building furniture, Fabricating tractor implements,Building Fire Fighting equipment, or working on my 20 heavily wooded acres. In 1993 I co founded the Greenough Potomac Fire Department located in Potomac. We have the largest fire protection area in Missoula County. We also have over 48 volunteers with makes us one of the largest Departments in MT.I don't chase much smoke these days , but I am finishing up my 4th term on the Board of Trustees, which is a publically elected position. About all I can say ...Expand for more
about retired life if asked is that the biggest difference I have noted between being retired and not retired, is that when your not retired, you get a day off. My wife and I are looking forward to the next reunion.(and yes Lavern im working on that BIO) School In 1960 I attended the University of Montana in Missoula, played freshman football for the Cubs.Dropped out in the middle of the year in 1961 because I had to many jobs and didn't have time to study. In 1973 while attending the Infantry officers advanced coarse at Fort Benning GA, I attended Columbus College, and graduated with an AA in industrial Management. This was a coarse that the army felt for some obscure reason all good infantry officers should attend. In 1975 The Army sent me back to the University of Montana under a Degree completion program.(This was a real experience, because by then I was 37 years old attending school with kids 19-20 years old, the Viet Nam war had only been over since 1971 and as soon as some of them realized I was a Veteran of Viet Nam and still in the military,I was looked at and delt with in some strange ways. Some of the professors enjoyed starting discussions about political issues of the time and setting me as the establishment to be questioned by the rest of the class) Manageing a Fire Department has caused me to continue to attend classes and training to stay current in legal and training issues. I am now 66 and I feel like I have been going to school most of my life
