Leo's Story

Reflections of days past: On rare occasions, my travels take me into the Los Angeles area and past our old campus site in which many happy memories of fellow students and facility members come to mind. We were all so fortunate to have such a place as a starting point in our adult lives. Upon my graduation from high school, I went onto college and completed my BS degree in aeronautical engineering. My career in the aerospace industry was a vagabond type lifestyle in that I was require to travel to major wind tunnel facilities across the country, from the Aims Research Center in Northern California to the Langely NASA Center in Virginia, and be domiciled in these locations for many months at a time. In the mid 70's, I desided it was time to become more domestic and start think about starting a family. Thus, I planted my roots in North San Diego County and started my own business specializing in the design and manufacture of electronic test equipment. I was fortunate in that the company went on to develope and secure sevral proprietary patents. Also playing part in the company's success was the support I had on the home front from my wife and family. Career wise, it turned out to be a very rewarding and challenging time in my life in that I found myself in many different job functions, from sales and engineering to insuring the financial stability of the company. I later sold the company in 1990 and remained on staff in a consulting capacity. With my consulting contract now compleeted, I finally retire in 1994. Life does have a tendency of pulling the rug out from you based upon death of my wife, Mary Louise, in mid 2008 after a prolonged period of illness. Thankfully my retired status afforded me the time to be with her until the end. Needless to say, her passing left a gaping ...Expand for more
hole in our family consisting of our four children, 2 boys and 2 girls, and nine grandchildren. Without dough, there were many loving and cherished years with Mary Louise for me and the kids to reflect back on. I've come to believe, even more so today, that the statement expressed in the Forrest Gump movie, "Life is like a box of chocolates...You never know what you're going to get", holds a high degree of credibility. All four children have moved to locations throughout the western US with their families and are actively pursuing their chosen careers. As for the grand kids, I must admit, being called "Grandpa Lee" took some getting use to, but has always brought a smile to my face. I hope that I'll be afforded continued years of good health to be witness to their growing into adulthood. After all, the future really does belong to the children. At present, I live in Fallbrook, California. I very much enjoy the country setting and open spaces that are afforded me by living here. I've never been much the rancher type person, but I tend to feel that it's starting to grow on me. With retirement, I've also become somewhat of a world history buff and have definate plans to travel to the Medierranean and see were it all began. My annual volunteer duties with the "Make A Wish" foundation will continue inwhich I derive great satisfcation in being affiliated with the people at make this organization the success that it is. It's just my little way of returning some of the many gifts that have been bestowed on me in my life time. In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you, my former classmate and friends; longevity, prosperity and good health over the coming years. And, if you are so compelled, I would enjoy hearing from you. Best regards, Leo "Lee" Simper
