Leonard's Story
Life
After I graduated in 1978, I went to college for a year (pre-med major). I hung out a couple of years after that, then I joined the military and became a Behavioral Science Specialist (fancy title for counselor) from 1981-1987, travelling over different parts of the U.S. as well as living in Europe for two years (Germany) and the Middle East for a little over a year (Egypt). I worked with alcohol and other drug addicts, rape victims, did crisis intervention, marital counseling and ran anger management groups. In 1987, I joined the Army Band and played (what else?) flute. d Green-to-Gold, where I was allowed to become a cadet and complete college. I got my B.S. in Chemistry in 1991 and became an Army Chemical Officer (focused on helping troops overcome the effects of nuclear, biological and chemical warfare). That took me to Hawaii, where I got out and did music for a living until 2000. I moved to Tennessee in 2000 and worked with the Tennessee Department of Correction, moving from being a counselor at three different prisons (mental health prison, intake prison and Death Row) to becoming the Assistant Director of Education for the State of Tennessee's DOC. In 2006, I moved to Alabama because of an incredible job offer, where I've been ever since.
