Leslie's Story
Life
Since graduating from Fenger in 1974 I received my Bachelor's Degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. I received my Master's in Social Work Degree from University of Illinois at Urbana in 1979. I worked 3 years as a social worker for rural schools in Central Illinois. In 1978 I met Mike and he and I married in Urbana in 1981. We celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary in August. After he got his Ph.D we moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma where he worked for Amoco. I worked for the local health dept. for 8 years in maternal child health. Upon the birth of my daughter Mara in 1991 I went home and have been home since. Our son Steven arrived in late 1993. We had a great life in Tulsa for 14 years making many friends. During that time my sister moved to Oklahoma for a temporary position as an ER doc. She has never left! We are very close so it was great. My parents joined us also in 1992 and have been wonderful to me and my family. After 14 years Amoco transferred us to Houston, Texas. It was a big change but we settled in and began to enjoy all there is to do in Texas plus the nice weather. However Amoco was bought up by BP and in 1999 we were transferred overseas to southern England. We had 3 fantastic years there. We did many things in England, Scotland and Wales and enjoyed the lifestyle. We made good friends and had a lovely pub on our street. of our regular weekend routine. We really enjoyed the sports over there and attended a Rugby World Cup game and also professional soccer or football games as it is called everywhere but the US! We also traveled to Europe several times visiting Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Rome, and Paris. Unfortunately Mike's job there ended so we opted to move to Alaska in the summer of 2002. It has been interesting up here. We can't believe we have been here over 7 years now.
Our children are now 18 and 16. Mara is a bright motivated young lady who plays soccer and plays the banjo. She is a music lover too. She is a freshman at Washington University in St. Louis which is where my husband received his undergrad degree. She is 3 inches taller than me too! It has been hard to have her so far away from us. Steven is a bright energetic young man who does well in school, plays the piano beautifully and is an excellent athlete. Soccer is his favorite. His club team won the Alaska State Cup in 2008. He ran high school cross country for the second year on the JV cross country running team. He also plays club and high school soccer. Can you tell I am proud of my children?
It has been quite an adventure since I left Fenger and I think more is around the corner.
I run and lift weights to burn off the chocolate. I also started playing adult soccer this Fall. I feel very lucky to have great friends and family and a wonderful husband.
