Leslie's Story

After Samohi I finished college with 3 majors and taught elementary school until I married and had two children. We lived four years in Ohio where my husband retired from the AF and we moved to Oregon where we have llived for 34 years. Salem was a great place to raise kids and be involved at many levels. I have been a civic volunteer for years serving on various boards and foundations. l was a costume designer for nearly 30 years and very active in the theatre including saving an historic theatre and chairing the repertory theatre group. Co-founded a group to save historic gardens and we just raised a quarter millon dollars to restore the 1882 greenhouse (2nd oldest on the West Coast). Currently on boards for Salem CIty Club, Salem Art Association, Willamette Heritage Center, Children's Theatre Foundation,, Help Autism Now Society. We have been drivers for Meals on Wheels for 15 years. When I retired from costuming I took up quilting which is a passion. Our quilt guild has 325 members. I belong to two "quilt bees" and mostly center on making "comfort quiltls" which are donated to 14 different service organizations. I have helped stage the last four bi-annual q...Expand for more
uilt shows and team to put on "Quiltopia", a four day quilt show in early October which raises funds for a worthwhile non-profit. I enjoy creating original designs for my quilts and have won awards for my efforts. Have a line of bag patterns and teach when the mood strikes. The photo shows my daughter, Laura, and me in front of the 7 foot tall "library" quilt I created to honor her receiving two master's degrees (history & library science) in June 2006. I machine embroidered the titles of her favorite 124 books and included photos of her a important times in her life. Won a number of prizes with this - was featured at the Oregon State Fair in 2007. The following year I created "Memories of Vermont" after visiting our son, Coleman. It also took top honors and will be his even though he now lives in Massachusetts!! Early in 2010 I was in a serious car accident and discovered our furnace was emitting toxic carbon monoxide fumes. Recognizing one has only so many "life units" I made some lifestyle changes including eliminating gluten from my diet. I look forward to what is ahead believing that you get back what you put in.
