Leslie's Story
I am retired, I was the first Orthopaedic Physicans Assistant at the Marshfield Clinic,Marshfield,WI in 1969. Prior to that I trained as a surgical technician at Carle Clinic,Urbana,IL, 1962, attened Methodist Hospital school of nursing, but did not finish. I obtained my LPN lic. Continued to work as surgical tech and LPN. Got married in 1965,my wife Cheryl Knopf was a student LPN,she was from Rantoul,IL. We wporked at Carle Clinic and Hospital. We moved to Wisconsin in 1967. We worked at Riverview Hospital,Wisconsin Rapids,WI, Cheri as a post surgical nurse and I in surg. We moved to Marshfield, WI in 1969 and worked at ST Joseph Hospital. Cheri in ICU and I in surg. MC was training Physician Assistants, I applied and was accepted. I was with Maechfield Clinic until 1995 when I had to retire because of Post Polio Syndrome. The PPS symptoms started in 1981, 1986 I had to leave surg and go off call. I approached the Ortho dept. with the suggestion of starting a Foot Clinic within our Ortho dept. It was accepted and I went off to get special training and started the foot clinic. The FC is still thriveing and has grown beyond my wildest dreams. My retirement has allowed me to hunt year round, rifle,crossbow and pistol. I really enjoy reading history,civil war,ww2 and Lincoln. I have also been collecting canteens from US and around the world. I also collect Coleman military lanterns & stoves. We own...Expand for more
an island up north and spend three months during the summer. My son and I fish every day during that time. My wife is the agency man ager for Marshfield Special Olympics Wisconsin. She is retired,after 31 years in clinic peds. 25 of those with one doc who wrote most of the WI laws reguarding child abuse. Cheri makes cards of all kinds, most her original design. Our son is the oldest living person in the world with a very rare and complicated neuro-developmental disability. He is 38,lives at home with us and works in a disabled workshop. I have been active with the board of directors for the workshop. Marshfield is is a small town in the center of the state with a medical clinic,research center, large hospital. They are a level one trauma center, have a childerns center in the hospital. The clinic has 42 outlying clinics and over seven hundred MD's. Our small town has 18,000 pop. and just about everybody is related, but it is really a great place to live. I am just one year from having my right hip replaced and feel so much better. The hip pain was really bad for three years. My sister Carole still lives in Peoria and we visit when we can. We still have friends in Champaign-Urbana,which is where I grew up. Haveing been born in Chicago I have carried my BEARS colors with pride and a lot of crap! I have another sister who lives in Sun Parrie,WI and another just west of Minneapolis on Lake Minatonka
