Leslie's Story

Life Everyone PLEASE go to coralparkfl "dot" alumz "dot" com and sign up! Well, first of all, I wish I could edit my first name; I don't go by Leslie anymore, I go by Leah ("lay-uh"), my Hebrew name, and have done so since 1984. Ok, so they want my life story... it's long and depressing - are you sure you want to hear about it? (If so, give a holler.) The best thing about my life is my two wonderful boys, who are charming, witty, talented... just like their mother. :) I am still very musical, although it's not playing clarinet or sax - it's playing guitar, singing, and songwriting. And no, I have not done anything professionally in this area, which leaves me more frustrated as time goes by. I did go through a period in the 90's of having a chance to play occasionally in open mics, some even in Nashville, which was a great experience. Update 10/'08 - I have recorded my first song, now I just need about $4000 to finish a CD. Any donors? My fondest memories of high school are marching band and all the friends from there. On the very rare occasions that I see a live marching band these days, I get goose bumps and tears, and wish so badly I could go back to those days. (Or find a marching band for decrepit adults!) Actually, from around '93 - '03 I did get to be in a small band in a Purim parade every year in Atlanta, but that only lasted about 15 minutes a year. And I was so out of practice that I was out of breath before we even began! But it was fun. I've lived in a bunch of places since high school, but I'm now in the New York area (against my will and better judgment). But that is a LONG story (aren't they all), so if you were rich enough to join classmates (I'm not), you know what to do to hear the rest of the story... (Update 10/'08 again - I am currently a gold member for a while thanks to a good deal I happened to catch - while I am here I am trying to spark interest in the upcoming multi-year reunion being planned for the summer of '09 - band members, please sign up!) Oh yeah and by the way I became orthodox (after another long and very interesting story) over 20 years ago, and have been Leah ever since. So that's it - I'd love to hear from you, whoever you are! Leah (the artist formerly known as Leslie) p.s. Oh, the pix, as it turns out, are almost exactly 30 years apart - the first was June '75, on the last day of school in 10th grade (you'll probably recognize the background), and the second was May '05. p.p.s. Everybody check out and join coralparkfl.alumz.com and spread the word! (You can contact me and other classmates through there also.) College I went to Dade South for 2 years right after high school, later went to Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina for 2 years, then seminaries in Israel and Monsey, New York. Workplace I think my very first real job (not counting babysitting or being a counselor at the Y) was in the Carvel at that shopping center around 92nd Avenue & the Trail. Very short-lived, don't remember why... Does anyone remember the "Make Your Own Sundae" store on Coral Way down towards the entrance to the Palmetto? That was during my senior year. Short-lived but fun. Especially because I got to work with my friend Ricky Schafer, class of '79 (who unfortunately passed away several years ago). Then there was the Baskin Robins by the U of M, while I was in Dade. Then I waitressed at Lum's near the old Jefferson's store on U.S. 1, and also the one in the Grove. Then after I dropped out of Dade (MDCC South) (from working too much while trying to go to school) I moved to Atlanta and worked at a Sh...Expand for more
oney's Big Boy there. (Hmmmm... why did so many of my jobs revolve around food?? I wonder how I got my weight problem?) Then I moved to New York and worked at the Brew Burger in Times Square, rumored to have been owned by the mob. Then I started going straight and got a respectable job on Madison Avenue as a typist with a medical advertising agency (back when we used to cut and paste the real way, remember?). Then (intermission) I went back to school in North Carolina, then during my vacations back home did some temp work typing. Oh yeah and also during high school during some of the breaks I did office work at the insurance company where my mother worked on Brickell Avenue, but I didn't want to interrupt the food theme back there... I also worked at their Doral (S.W. 36th (?) St., not the beach) branch during my stint at Dade South, sending form letters to people telling them their checks bounced, how monotonous! And to think we actually typed them all individually besides (with carbon copies yet)! Boy are we old! Ok, so anyway we are still during the intermission when I was in school in North Carolina, then in Israel for 10 months, oh no wait a minute before that I stayed home a year to work to go to Israel, during which time I had two great jobs through a temp agency, one at Racal Milgo also in the Doral area, and one at a bank downtown (Florida National Bank) for a few months. Ok so then I was back in school, sort of (seminary), in Israel, then I was in LA for a year, first helping a rabbi coordinate a seminar, then various temp office work, then a seminary in Monsey, NY, then I worked for an industrial furniture catalog company tracking orders, then I got married and did a little more temp office work, then had kids and didn't "work" (meaning I worked harder than ever but just didn't get paid for it) for a few years, then got divorced and moved to Atlanta, then worked (outside the home that is) a year as a preschool assistant, then in a dentist's office, occasionally teaching some music on the side (recorder to elementary school kids, plus some guitar, which I still do from time to time), then for a psychiatrist (you can be sure I needed one by now) typing reports about people with even more problems than me, then for a few months got a maternity leave replacement job for a retired surgeon at Emory University who was writing medical textbooks, then for another psychiatrist (I still wasn't cured), then for four years for a medical marketing agency, the longest I ever stayed in one place (could you tell?). Then I moved back to Monsey, NY, and for the first year and a half did not have very good luck with finding a decent job, mostly due to not having a car (having wrecked it while in Atlanta with no collision insurance) and then, thank G-d, this past July ('05) became a legal secretary for a really nice real estate lawyer. I'm sure I left out a lot of other things, but when I think of them I will try to add them in here because I wouldn't want you losing any sleep because you are worried you might be missing something! Another update 10/'08 - I lost the job with the nice real estate attorney due to the lousy market, and now I'm working for a company that does state filings for LLC's and corporations. But I wish I could do music full time and make a living from it! Military My military history consists of growing up on Gomer Pyle. And watching M*A*S*H reruns much later in life than when it first aired. And now my son is thinking of joining the air force. I am looking for help in trying to talk him out of it, if anyone has any suggestions.
