Lester's Story
Life
When I graduated from West in 1974 I had the opportunity for a scholarship in electronics, but decided to pass on college. I was already working in a service station making good money and couldnÂt see the needÂ
. andÂ
. didnÂt have the desire. Early in 1975 I decided to make the move to a New Car dealership and went to work as a Used Car Technician at Northpark Mazda in Davenport, which used to be located across from the VW dealership on Kimberly. After a few months I was promoted to the New Car Department and spent all day overhauling rotary engines, which I enjoyed very much. Then in late 1975 Northpark Mazda was bought out by Volkswagen/BMW of East Moline and I decided to move across the river as the pay was much better than what I was making. Once I started working at East Moline I was making more money than I had before and could actually afford to move out on my own. I rented an apartment in Moline packed up my stuff and moved out on my ownÂ
. alone and single. A short while later I was swimming at one of my fellow TechnicianÂs house and met his niece, Julie. We started dating and fell madly in love and got married on October 28, 1977. Little did we know at the time, but we had a little surprise in store and my son Joel (named after my best friend when I was a kid) was born on July 2, 1978 (you do the math). We bought our first little house on 18 ½ Avenue in Rock Island in 1979 and life was going well. I was promoted to Service Manager, won a few awards from VW and BMW, increasing my knowledge and experience over the next few years. In 1982 I was recruited by a large dealership in Corpus Christi, Texas and decided to make the move from Illinois to Texas. I lived with friends in Corpus while Julie was getting everything together back home, but it didnÂt take long to realize that the Âbig dealer had lied to me about many things. Fortunately, friends I made with Mazda over the years called an...Expand for more
d offered a job as District Service Manager in Louisville, Kentucky, which I accepted on December 12, 1983. I spent the next 20 years with Mazda, starting in Louisville with the Kentucky/Tennessee District, then in 1985 moving back to Rock Island and running the Iowa/Nebraska District. Then in 1987 I made the big move to St. Louis, Missouri, taking over that area. In less than 4 years we had made 3 moves, so I agreed to stay put in St. Louis until Joel graduated from High School and we lived a great life in St. Louis for the next 13 years. In 2000 I was offered a big promotion to Sales, which would move us to Memphis, Tennessee and away from the place we had come to know as homeÂ
.. St. Louis. When I accepted the position I assured that once I gained experience I would be relocated back to St. Louis. Unfortunately that was not to be and during a subisquent reorganization, I was forced to relocate to the Regional Office in Houston, Texas and was promoted to a Market Representation Manager. The problem was that I had no desire to live in Houston and even less desire to work in the Regional Office. Again, I thought (after I gained even more experience) they would move me back to St. Louis at the next opening. That said, I also decided to hedge my bets and bought a house back in St. Louis and moved Julie and Joel back, while I took an apartment in Houston and serve out the 1 year employment contract. Since I had 20 years in with the company they thought I would never leave. WellÂ
one year later in 2004 I turned in my resignation and accepted a position with Hyundai Motor of America as a District Sales Manager moving back home with my family in St. Louis. It is now 2009 and everything is going great. In October Julie and I will celebrate our 32th wedding anniversary, which is a testament to what a wonderful person she is, having put up with my stupidity for all these years.
