Lew's Story

College In High School I wanted to be a Dentist. After High School I went to the Univ of So Cal for two years. I joined the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity and moved into the Frat house in my sophomore year. Party Time! I also found love for the first time! Very exciting and fun times. Due to poor grades and lack of interest in math/science, I changed my major to Education (5th grade elem teacher) and transferred to Long Beach State in Sept, 1967. I also took some classes at Cerritos. Then, in late 1968 I joined the Army Natl Guard (Reserves for 6 years) with a bunch of my old high school friends. But, that's another story. After returning from Basic Training at Fort Ord in mid 1969 I found an advertisement on the back of a magazine that asked, "Do you want to be a computer programmer?" I took their entry (logical and pattern type questions) exams and passed with flying colors. Foreign language was always easy for me and that is what computer Programming is. I was amazed at how fast the computer printer (it was the size of two refrigerators at that time) was generating words on the paper...Expand for more
so quickly. I was a pretty fast typist and fair piano player but couldn't produce words that fast. I had to find out how they did that. And so, I changed my major again, this time to Computer Science. But, there was no Computer Science offered in College in 1969. I had to consider a Trade School. I entered Control Data Corporation Institute in Jan, 1969, to learn IBM Computer Operations, Systems Analysis, and Programming. It was located in downtown Los Angeles around Spring St and 4th Street. It was Jan, 1969. I attended classes 4 days a week with a hands-on computer lab all day on Friday. I lived in a little studio apartment in Whittier. I graduated at the top of my class in December, 1969, who would have thought, and got my first job operating a Univac 1001 Computer and 1004 Card Sorter, various printers, huge tape drives, and other computer equipment. I always intended to go back to get my 4 year degree, but never did. Instead, I got 'certified' by Industry Standards Testing in Computer Programming and then, Information Systems Project Management. End of College notes.
