Linda's Story
What a tremendous honor to be elected to the College Station City Council...my platform was based on neighborhood integrity as so many of our older neighborhoods....the ones we all grew up in...are being forgotten as the city grows. What fun Russ would have had having a "politician" in the family...{{{grin}}}
Sadly, Russ passed away July 31, 2013, very unexpectedly. I'm blessed for the years we had together. We knew each other since we were in 7th grade and we were high school sweethearts at A&M Consolidated High School, graduating with the Class of '65.
We went our separate ways after our freshman year in college, and after 41 years of being apart, we finally got back together and had so much fun in the seven years we were married. People who didn't know us thought we had been married our entire adult lives.
We started an online store called the "Texas Trading Post-Fun Texas Stuff." We thought it would be something fun to do after we retired, keeping us busy a couple of hours a day, drinkin' coffee and sitting at the computer in our jammies.
We never dreamt that it would quickly become the largest online store for Texas Gifts and Decor on the internet and we've won "The Best of the Brazos Valley for Online Shopping" for the past three years.
I was in the Hospitality Business for nearly 30 years, starting out with Hilton Hotels. After 10 years, I got a call from Denver, Colorado, asking if I had ever thought about leaving Texas. Being recently divorced, I told the headhunter "well, not until now." I accepted the position of Vice President of Toursim for the Denver Metro Area and after five years, I decided I couldn't handle the snow and ice anymore.

d the position as Executive Director of the Lubbock CVB and after a year...I got another phone call...I was offered the job as Executive Director of the Palm Springs (California) Convention and Visitors Bureau and jumped at the opportunity.
After another five years, my Mom was diagnosed with cancer and I knew I needed to come home to Texas. I accepted the position of Vice President of Tourism for the Corpus Christi CVB and that's where I was working when Russ and I got back together.
I loved the tourism industry - I was able to travel all over the world promoting the Cities I worked for and made amazing lifelong friends.
Now that I'm back home in College Station, what fun it has been reconnecting with more lifelong friends....people I've known since I was five/six years old. Every time we're together, the years just fade away.
I'm managing our online store by myself now - with several employees who are responsible for getting the orders packed up and shipped out every day.
I was Chairperson of College Station's 75th Anniversary in 2013, which included putting together a three month exhibition at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum. I serve on College Station's Historic Preservation Committee, and I'm on the Board of Directors for the Better Business Bureau and the B/CS Sister Cities Association.
Having graduated from both the Citizens Fire Academy and Citizens Police Academy, I'm very involved in volunteering with the College Station Police Department. I've earned my certifcation as a CERT (Certified Emergency Response Team), with ongoing training, mostly in Search and Rescue.
I'm blessed with three gorgeous daughters, all married with seven grandkids.
