Linda's Story
After graduating from EB, I went to Bakersfield College and then transferred to San Jose State College. I earned a BA in Mathematics in 1965. That same summer I married Tim Boyd. We settled in Monrovia, CA (near Pasadena). For 4 years I worked as a computer programmer and then quit to raise a family (daughter and son). After 13 years out of the work force, I needed to help contribute to the support of the family, but I didn't want to work full-time. For 4 years I worked as an instructional aide in Special Education at Monrovia High School.
The teacher for whom I worked kept saying, "Gad, Linda, you're so good at this. You ought to become a teacher!" So I started taking all the classes needed to earn a credential teaching secondary mathematics. I took one class every quarter at Cal Poly Pomona until I earned my credential in 1989. I completed a Master's Degree in Education at Azusa Pacific University in 1995.
I taught math at Rosemead High School for 25 years and just retired in 2014. For 5 of those years I was department chairman.
I have continued to play my flute all these years. In 1962, I won the senior competition, Starring Kern County Artists, and performed the first movement of Mozart's G Major Flut...Expand for more
e Concerto with the Kern Philharmonic Orchestra. In Southern California, I have played in an orchestra that got its start at Pasadena City College, but broke away from the college in 1983 to become the Pasadena Community Orchestra. I joined this group in 1966 and was principal flute for many years. When I became department chairman, I knew I would have too many school duties to allow time for me to practice the first part, so I asked to play the second part and let someone else have a chance to play first.
Right after I retired, I learned that I have stage 4 triple negative breast cancer, so I have been battling cancer for about 10 months now. I did have a mammogram 11 months before this diagnosis, and everything looked okay then! This cancer is very aggressive. It has already spread to a lymph node and to both lungs. My oncologist is trying to keep everything under control with chemotherapy. She said she can't fight it by starting with surgery., so I am still all here. She has already tried Doxil, Xeloda, and now Taxol to shrink the various nodules that show up on CT scans. So far I have been able to tolerate the side effects of all these treatments. This isn't exactly how I planned to spend my retirement!
