Linda's Story

Hello! Like many I did the marriage, kids, baseball/soccer/choir/theater mom thing, blah, blah, blah. I'm a late bloomer. Somehow my life took on a life of its own. I followed my passions and was led to discover talents I never knew I had. In my 30's I became a nut about video and I ended up producing a two time award winning community talking heads show in Long Beach. In my 40's I started writing, which led me to becoming a Spoken Word Artist performing at high schools, colleges and different venues. In 1997 I wrote a play about a ghost story experience I had when I was 12 years old while I was a student at Dodson - it was so well received in Long Beach that in 1999 I produced it again in San Pedro and New York (off-broadway), which was one of my ultimate highs. At the same time I found a great hula kumu (teacher) and I trained for the Merrie Monarch, which is the Olympics of hula. 1999 was an incredible year, but I had to choose between my play and hula - I chose the play. Soon after I divorced and had to rebuild my life while putting three kids through college. I'm proud to say I have three college grads. Hula came back into my life when I reluctantly accepted a temporary position as a hula instructor which ended up becoming a 6 year business which satisfied a youthful dream I had to be professional dancer - I was in my 50's but it finally happened! In 2006 my little sister Tina (15 years younger) was in a devastating motor vehicle accident which rendered her a quadriplegic and unable to speak. It has been difficult these past 5 1/2 years I have been her patient advocate, her voice, and her cheerleader with medical, legal responsibilities but I have never given up the hope that she will recover. And despite many people thinking she would never recover, she's come along way and we've both learned so much. In ...Expand for more
2009 I met the love of my life, Steve and we are ridiculously happy and quite content with our life together. I published my first book, Talk is Cheap, a collection of my spoken word performances. I began teaching writing/theater/producing at a theater in Long Beach that was built in honor of my writing mentor, Manazar Gamboa. I'm not a teacher, per se, but I can pull a story out of most anyone. It is a part time gig with lots of community involvement and the kids are rough, but when the light goes on inside them, man, that is an incredible high that I'm lucky to experience. Right now I'm working with some of the most amazing young poets/spoken words artists in Long Beach to build a team of youth to compete in the Brave New Voices Slam Poetry competition - it is a very exciting part of my life right now. I see myself as a Commmunity Arts Activist. At the 35th reunion I met Elaine Kruger (now Ruggerio), reconnected with Lourdes (Lopez) Bielicki, Toni O'Donnell, Nancy Budar, Lawrence Alva. Reconnected with Teri Accetta at karaoke bar and now we are karaoke Divas! Teri, Lourdes, Elaine and I spotted Karen Fleischman (now Polan) at a cowboy bar. Joe Justiniano joined the Redman lodge, so we see a lot more of him. Tony Morales and Chuck Wilcox have also joined us at a few local Pedro events. We catch up at the Redman Lodge Social on the 3rd Fridays of each month; at the annual Taste of San Pedro; Godmother's (Jack Bagliazo's bar) every now and then; Cars and Stripes on 4th of July weekend, and Hot Pedro Nights, 1st Thursday, etc. It has been great making new friends with classmates I didn't know while in school. We are growing up! As I'm approaching 60, our classmates, whether we knew them or not, are the only ones who shared the experience of coming of age in the 60's and 70's and especially in still "small town" Pedro.
