Linda's Story

I was born a poor black child ... wait, no that was Steve Martin. Okay, I was born in 1953, Linda Ruth English. My family moved to Kearns when I was not quite 5 years old, I don't really remember being anywhere but at home in Kearns with my family. The years in Kearns flew by, my childhood turned to young adulthood and then vanished into this middle age. I watched Kearns grow and prosper. Where the high school sits now were the fields I played in as a child. Across the street from there is now the Youth Center, the underpass didn't exist back then and you had to be mindful of the railroad tracks. I remember we would put pennies on the tracks and wait for the Kennecott train to squish them - it was great sport! Kearns was an endless activity for me and my sisters. We would peddle our bicycles to the swimming pool down by Kearns Jr High and spend our summers in the cool water. You could get chocolate coke for a nickle at the Woolworths counter "luncheonette" and fresh roasted nuts from their candy counter. It was much simpler then.... I remember all the hub-bubb when the High School was being built. My childhhood playground vanished into concrete and brick rising on the hill. It was a very exciting time! The class of 1971 was so large we went on split sessions with the Junior High until the school could be completed enough for us to move in. Part of our class remained at Kearns Junior and the rest of us went as the ONLY Freshman class Kearns High eve...Expand for more
r had. There was the duty and honor of selecting the school colors, mascot, school song - and learning the school song! It was a great time as the blend of Cyprus Pirates and Granger Lancers became Kearns Cougars. The voices echoing in the hallways, the slamming of lockers, the bells ringing out their warning for us to get to class and faces, can still be heard and visualized today. It was a turbulent time, Vietnam, Civil Rights, Free Love, temptation and experimentation of drugs but we joined together as a community, a class, an ecclectic group of individuals known as Kearns High Cougars. We watched some of our classmates fall to temptation, we saw many of our classmates drafted and shipped off to war, we overcame segregation and found the pigment of ones skin was only pigment, we all faced the same challenges - which we seemed to embrace and certainly for the majority have endured. If at any given moment you have the luxury to reflect, please do. Reflect on the era with all that was happening, the beautiful new school, our pride in being part of it, the people, teachers, students, parents and community that openly shared their knowledge, time, enthusiasm with us all. Reflect on the friendships and the common bond that encourages us to visit sites like this and the technology that allows us to do it. We are coming up on 40 years since last we were truly together, oh my, that is a long time but in reality it is just a second ago, as you see, I still remember.
