Linda's Story
As I think about the 50 years that have passed since high school I remember that we have all come through some hard times and hopefully some extraordinary times. I can almost say my career has been as a student....academically, personally, and as a student of life.
Someone once said that we now live long enough to have 5 careers. I am happily into my 3rd career right now. I earned a degree in Music Therapy and interned at U of Michigan. I came back to ABQ to build a Music Therapy and Creative Arts Therapy program at the Children's Psychiatric Hospital and loved it!
After about 6 years I moved to the Pacific Northwest (Seattle) with someone who had a passion for sailboats, so I learned to sail, race a 23' sloop, and then sail to Bermuda in a 40' sloop. Living in Seattle led me to seek out a new career path (music therapy is a rare profession here in this biotech corridor). I became a registered nurse with a Master's degree in Oncology Nursing. r patients with cancer who were receiving novel cancer treatments or Bone Marrow Transplant. This lead to a couple of years as a research nurse supporting studies with blood products. From there I was recruited to work in the biotech industry as an educator and consultant. I now work for a Global Pharma company which has allowed me work to advance cutting-edge therapies for cancer, develop and manage field medical teams and to travel all over the U.S.
Without a doubt, while in high school was a difficult and troubled time for me. I am thankful for the friends I made and for the school counselor who led me to a Summer science program at New Mexico tech.
I never once imagined what sort of opportunities were out there or the path that I would take. I remember the newness of learning as well as the challenges and struggles of entering a social world. But overall, I choose to recall the memories of true friends, teachers and school events which will always be a part of my fondest high school memories.
