Linda's Story
Life
I've been married 35 years this June 30 to Sherman Bekkum of Westby. We returned to college when our sons were 3 mos. and 1 yr. of age. My husband was commissioned as a 2LT in military right out of college. We've lived/traveled to about every state to include Alaska. He also toured in Korea, Germany, with our last station being Japan. Our oldest son, Ryan Curtis, is CEO of an IT Company based in Michigan, still single but dating a Korean/American lovely girl. So there's hope !!! Our youngest son, Curtis Ryan (only 1 yr. difference in age) married a Japanese girl (Miki) while we were stationed in Japan. They returned to the U.S. ahead of us to attend college...she graduated as an R.N. and Curtis first received his ph.D in Micro-Biology paid for by grants from NASA, and then went on to become a doctor. They live in Fayetteville, Arkansas and have given us 2 grandchildren...Kiki Jera (7 yrs.) and Mikkel Ren was born Dec. 23, 2006. s military career. When we were able to stay at a duty station more than a year, I'd work as a Secretary or Typist. My longest job was in Japan where I first went to work in Civilian Personnel Office as a Typist and was eventually promoted as Head Secretary for the Construction Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and held that position for 3 years until we returned to the states when Sherman retired out of the military. We've been busy the last 12 years gutting and remodeling room-by-room what was a 100 yr. old farmhouse in Westby. As my husband used to work in construction before we married, he's been able to enjoy it as a hobby !!! As for me, I only wish we were done...but looks like he's got about 3 more years before finishing!!!!! I was recently working at the pharmacy in Westby until it was shut down so now I'm once again a stay-at-home wife raising 3 puppies (1 chichahua and 2 jack russell/toy terriers). I thought life would be quieter after our sons left the nest, but since then my brother has moved into our upstairs apartment (which we enjoy his company) and I've found raising puppies is much more time consuming than raising our sons.
