Linda's Story
After graduation I worked in Insurance for awhile, even got my brokers license. Then in the fall of 78 I met my husband - we married in Jan 79. Dennis, my husband, was in the Air Force and living in San Antonio, Tx. So I married and moved to San Antonio. I did not go back to work at that point as Dennis had a 7 yr old daughter who came to live with us 6 months later. Yes, I have a stepdaughter who couldn't be anymore my own daughter than if I had her myself! In 1981, we had our son, David, and when he was 8 months old we moved to Hawaii for 4 years. After that we came back to San Antonio and it has been home ever since. My husband had a 20 year career with the Air Force, retired and started a new career working for the government at Randolph Air Force Base as a Systems Analyst. I stayed home for many years taking care of the house and the kids, but eventually went back to work at a few odd jobs - I taught folk art painting for awhile (something I picked up while living in Hawaii), was an Office Manager for Naturalizer of Texas for awhile, and then eventually ended up working for our school district for 10 years before I decided to quit and go back to school. I then attended St. Philips College and got my Associates of Applied Science in Health Information Technology Degree. During that time, however, my husband got a job promotion that actually allowed me to 'retire!' Also, we have 3 grandchildren (a...Expand for more
ll boys) that I was spending a lot of time taking care of since our daughter (divorced by now) was working and going to school herself. Eventually she graduated and got a job, but then decided to move to Portland, OR. That was 2 years ago. Last year our son and his girlfriend left San Antonio to find 'whatever they were looking for', and also ended up in Portland. So now all our kiddos are in Portland OR!! Needless to say, I make a few trips a year up there myself! Right now I work parttime for a Podiatrist. My husband has just under 5 years before he can retire and yes, we are 'thinking' about moving to Portland OR. But that's still all up in the air.
In the last 10 years or so I have become very involved with needlework. I belong to the Embroiders Guild of America (EGA) and the American Needlework Guild (ANG). I was pretty active in the EGA locally for awhile, but am taking a break from it all right now. I stitch a lot - all kinds of stitching. I have learned from teachers from all over the country (and world actually!) and have found it totally fascinating. I don't think a day goes by that I don't stitch on something!!
My parents still live in NY - Orchard Park in fact. My brother is in Alden with his family, and my sister moved to Ohio. I usually get back to NY and Ohio at least once a year still. I used to hate flying, but I do it several times a year and have gotten very used to it.
