Linda's Story
Ok I'll come clean this picture is 20 years old. But I couldn't find another recent photo I liked. Actualy I didn't go to Litchfield, Hinckley or Stockbridge. I'm trying to find other people who went to New School at Lenox. We're are organizing a reunion for 2009. Look it up at New school at lenox, class of "74.
Now my story after Lenox closed went to Vershire and graduated in the 11 grade. Came back to California and went to U.S.F. for 2 years and hated it. I was way too young for college I entered at age 16 and I was going thru culture shock, moving from the east coast to the west coast. So I dropped out. Did several jobs and then sold real estate in the 80's for about 10 years until the market stalled. Had a child, my son David. Skipped the whole marriage thing. Then one day I'm watching the cooking shows they had a raffle for a 5 day cooking course at the California Culinary Academy. I won and from the first day I knew I wanted to cook for a living. After graduation I catered for about 10 years my own small company. I grew tired of all the moving equipment around and I had always loved working in hotels (I did my externship at the Ritz Carlton). Now comes the crazy part. I worked at 2 non-union hotels ...Expand for more
and after 9/11 I was laid off. There was a new hotel opening that was going to be union. I was not pro-union but I needed a job. So got the job and what a difference. The long and short of it is that I'm a shop steward, I worked on our contract negoitation committee. During the strike and lockout of '04 I did alot of interviews television, radio and print. I once refused to tell a reporter how old I was. I said "39 and holding" . It turns out the reporter was with the New York Times. oops! Got arrested 4 times (for the union and in peaceful demonstration). We usually do demonstration on Labor Day and our contract expires next year. So I might want to change the date of the reunion, because it's alot of fun. We have a good relationship with SFPD and we're non-violent and I love getting arrested for the union. See I told you this was the crazy part. As a shop steward I file grievances with management for violating the contract and just recently won a years worth of back pay for our hiring hall. I'm very proud of that. The union wants me to work for them, but I still love cooking. So you never know what life has in store for you. I never thought I would be a union activist or a single mom or a cook. But I am.
