Linda's Story

Hi everyone! I hope you are all doing well. As for me, I've been blessed well beyond what I'd ever expected. I'm a wife, mother, and grandma, and I live in a very beautiful part of California. Here is, pretty much, the rest of my story from where I left most of you (at graduation): After high school I attended Amundsen-Mayfair Jr. College. I began as a PE major, but after I injured my knee, I changed to Kindergarten-Primary Ed. That's what I majored in when, after receiving my AA at Mayfair, I started at Northeastern Illinois State College. However, I was SO fascinated with psychology (and ANALYZING everybody) that I became a Psych. major (like ALMOST everybody!). After graduating with a BA in Psych., I worked in it for a few years. At one point I wanted to be a child psychologist. However, after realizing that I probably could not save the world and I didn't like the mental "health" system, I dabbled in some other things; waitressed, worked for a plant company at the Sears Tower, worked in a factory, and taught Adult Basic Ed. and GED for the Chicago City Colleges. After a while I realized that I liked teaching, and so I enrolled back at Northeastern in a master's program in Early Childhood Special Ed. Before I completed my first trimester in that, my husband, David, and I were surprised to find out that we were also in another kind of first trimester, looking forward to the birth of our first child, David III. It was then that we decided to move to San Diego where he would finish his MA in Social Work. Later we moved up to San Luis Obispo County, where Dave found a job working with the developmentally disabled. I enjoyed staying home with little David, and also with our daughter, Susannah, who was born at home two years after our son. Later I ran a daycare home, licensed for 6 children, including my own. When the children were in elementary school, I began working as an assistant teacher in a 2nd grade class, and later in special education classes. I also did respite in the homes of parents of disabled children. My favorite time as a teacher's aid was when I worked for 2 years with a deaf teenager who also had C...Expand for more
P and was in a wheelchair. I learned basic American sign language and did my best to help him learn to read. He was a delight to work with! In 2000 I became certified in Montessori Pre-Primary and Primary, and have recently been teaching in a wonderful school as a long-term sub. I especially enjoy singing with the children and playing my guitar. Both of our children are married, and our son and his wife, Heather, have 2 children, a boy, David IV, and a girl, Abigail. David III works with computers at a bank and his wife stays home with the children. They live about a 45 min. drive from us. Our daughter and her husband chose to continue their education before they start a family. Susannah and HER David (Yep, ANOTHER one!) just left for northern California to go to Humbolt U. for their masters. Suz, having earned a BA in Theater at Fullerton, has changed her major to Kinesiology, and her David continues on in Math. In our otherwise quite empty nest we have four cats left, after having as many as ten at one time. 'Used to have a dog (He was this wonderful old springer someone just couldn't keep), but, sadly, he passed on a couple of years ago. I would LOVE to have another dog like him. I've also always dreamed of having a horse, some chickens, and perhaps some goats and sheep someday (I'd like to learn to use the wool). All in all I can't complain. Big Dave and I have had some wonderful memories from our almost 30 years of marriage; 10 foreign exchange students, travels to Russia, England, France, Switzerland, and Germany; sports, ballet, and boy scouts and girl scouts when the children were young; camping across the country (including Hawaii),etc. All this, and my doctor says that I tested out "pretty darn normal" on my physical this year. So far I haven't had any major medical problems. For this, and for all I have been given I truly thank God. I look forward to hearing from some of you in the near future (especially from some of my club sisters -Yes, I STILL have my Emeralds jacket!). Again, I hope life has treated you well. Love and Peace... Linda Kay (Knutson) Mulvey
