Linda's Story
I have been back in Canada since summer 1966 - we came back for EXPO 67 - one of the most magical events of the century (I may be a bit biased, but I think anyone who was 16 or 17 during that summer would agree). I finished high school here in an all-girls school run by nuns. It was a shock... After high school, I worked as a nanny in France and then in England. When I came back, I found a job at the British Consulate General here in Montreal, and studied part-time at night, and so began a life-long addiction to classrooms! I worked at the consulate for 8 1/2 years and then went to work for McGill University as a recruiter. Thirty years later, I am still at McGill, (not always as a recruiter) although this year I took an unpaid leave to be able to spend more time with both my husband and my mother, both of whom have ongoing health issues. I continued going to school intermittently all the way through my career and the last thing I did was a graduate program in translation, so this year I am translating a book on French monetary history around the time of the French Revolution. It is great, because I can pretty much make my own schedule. I went to a large number of schools and each one was very special in its own way - and very different! I attended three high schools; in Quebec City, Malverne and Montreal. I spent longer at Malverne (3 years) than anywhere else and have incredibly fond memories of all the people I met there. I would love to hear from you!
Update Summer 2011. I finally retired from McGill after close to 35 years! It was a decision long in the making and I am thoroughly enjoying the new-found sense of freedom. I have just opened my own translation office and am embarking on a second career!
Update Summer 2014: Well, retirement didn't last long. In addition to the translation, I am also managing an exciting project for one of the professors I used to work with in the Economics Department at...Expand for more
McGill. It's really fun, even if I am now old enough to be just about everyone's mother...
January 2015: Our project (Canada's Ecofiscal Commission) officially launched on November 4th. Check it out at (ecofiscal.ca). Very exciting!
February 2018: I gave up my office and my position with the Ecofiscal Commission to move my translation business to a home office when it became clear that my husband, Chris, needed me to be home more. He was diagnosed a couple of years ago with Dementia with Lewy Bodies, a condition on the Parkinson's spectrum. He is getting increasingly confused and his world is shrinking. Despite everything, he is now in a phase where he is generally happy and apart from the Lewy Body, relatively healthy. When he was diagnosed, I knew nothing about this disease and the learning curve was pretty steep. It is, unlike Alzheimer's and other dementias, not a gradual decline, but a very up and down situation: fine one moment and not the next. It's a real adventure for both of us - but I am grateful for every day that we have. I guess we are all moving into new situations as we get older, even if we still feel like teenagers most of the time...
A few years ago, I attended the 50th reunion of the high school I attended in New York and I was struck by the fact that we had evolved into such interesting people. It was wonderful to re-connect and a revelation for me. I guess that because we had moved so often, I just assumed that no-one would remember me because we never stayed anywhere long enough and was amazed and delighted to discover that this wasn't entirely true. I have now attended (at different milestone years) a reunion at each of the three high schools I attended (Quebec High, Malverne High and Marymount). In fact, There are a few people from each of the "biggie" schools I attended (ie. for at least 2 years) that I keep in touch with - largely thanks to social media. It is truly wonderful!
