Linda's Story

Life My Spouse We were working in the litigation division of a San Francisco corporation called Itel. Itel had filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and folks were hired to work alongside the attorneys. Most of the assistants had degrees in art, music, writing, etc., so I met a lot of interesting people, including my husband, Patrick. I really didn't like him at first---we spent a lot of time debating issues---perhaps I decided I'd found someone as uppity and cantankerous as I, because we began seeing each other romantically after about 2 years.UPDATE: 4/04 Patrick and I are now divorced, but my good feelings about him still stand. We are the best of friends, and hold one of our highest purposes to be good role models and parents for our son (who is now 13, going on 14). My Pets The ants arrive infrequently, usually after a rain. I don't have to put anything sweet out to draw them, they simply come, with their hearty appetites, moving into my kitchen for a spell, lingering around the sink for water. I don't like to kill anything, so we coexist amiably for awhile. Just when I begin to feel homicidal towards them, they disappear from whence they came, not to be seen for another season or so. Truly, the best pet---low maintenance, though unpredictable. My Kids Just that he's a genius. Oh, and that he: has extensive knowledge about wildlife (both on land and in sea); has a great singing voice; enjoys swimming; is a real film fan (and can identify quick shots of actors in a brief scene better than anyone I know); wants to become either a filmmaker or a marine biologist or both. He has been in Chinese immersion school for the past 4.5 years, so he reads and writes Cantonese. ...Expand for more
UPDATE: 4/04 Well, I never thought I'd send my child to Catholic school, but, considering the options for public middle school in San Francisco, we took the plunge. Thankfully, it's a very liberal-minded place which doesn't mind a few Buddhists (us) in the mix. Great learning environment for him, pleasant parent groups for me. My Job I am a consultant for Family Caregiver Alliance, a non-profit serving families caring for brain-impaired loved ones. My role is that of Director of Camps and Retreats. I create weekends for both patients and caregivers, so that caregivers may get a break from their responsibilities and patients may have a good time in a new setting. It's very lively, wonderful work, where my background in theatre and social work blend. We've been featured on National Public Radio, the San Francisco ABC affiliate, and, this spring, Peter Jennings' ABC News is coming to film us. It's very rewarding, and I have flexible hours so that I can be there for my son when he needs me. UPDATE: 5/04 I just got through presenting at the American Society on Aging Conference, and have been working on building cutting-edge Alzheimer's units at a few facilities here in SF. Rewarding work, good people. College A wonderful time in which I studied both theatre arts and psychology, earned units working as a counselor on LB Hotline's crisis intervention line, performed in a CETA program through CSULB and LB Civic Light Opera (in which we performed for seniors all over LA County---a journey towards my current work in the field of aging), enjoyed the challenge of studying under some brilliant professors, and met some extraordinary peers who are still my lifelong friends.
