Linda's Story
I moved to TAmpa when I was in the first grade coming from Sikeston, Mo. I went to Mendenhall Elem, then Lois Ave. Elem, then Twin Lakes Elem and finally Egypt Lake Elem. Then I went to Oak Grove Jr High and then on to Hillsborough Hi before moving back to Sikeston, Mo in Nov. of 1964. I lived at 2519 W. Diana St. Some of my best friends at Oak Grove were Carol DeVera, Diane Flynn, Ruth Ann and Pam Crawford, Kathy Burt, Lavinia McFarland, Bobby Leavens, Carolyn Van Buskirk, Dick Stokes, Vernon Chewning, Larry Hardin, Barry Mays, Willie Serrano, Kay Keller, David Keene, Linda Lentz, Sandra Taylor, Susan Tyler,Leigh Denham,Sharon Whitmore,Cathy Duncan,Craig McConnell, Rod Stewart, Randy Rigby, Amy Bettner,Sandra Commander. I could go on and on. What a surprise it was one day at the end of Major League Baseball season in 1976 to learn that our classmate a year ahead of us, Steve Garvey, was playing in the World Series.
I graduated from Sikeston High School and worked for a year in Sikeston and Memphis, TN and then married in 1969 to a high school classmate. We moved to Wichita Falls, TX (Air Force) and then on to Little Rock, AR to finish out Air Force stint. We had two sons while in the Air Force. After 6 yrs of marriage we divorced in 1975. I worked for attorneys in Jacksonville, AR for nearly a year before meeting my second husband. We married in March 1976. He had a son by a previou...Expand for more
s marriage. We had a son together in Sept 1979. My husband is a CPA but owns two other businesses also. We have two grandsons (ages 13 and 14) a grandaughter, age 4 and another one on the way due in August.
I have worked as a secretary to attorney's, helped in my husband's accounting office, done much volunteer work in our church and schools. I have sung all of my life in school and church choirs and made a CD in 2004.
I love to do all sorts of sewing and handwork, paint, play piano, cook and decorate.
I have the fondest memories of my time at Oak Grove Jr Hi. Can even remember names of so many students and teachers. I loved my time there and was a cheerleader in my 9th grade year. What fun that was!
I would love to hear from anyone who remembers those days and me!
The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Carol DeVera, because we were cheerleaders together in 9th grade and we became best friends..
My current age is 59. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be old and decrepit or even dead. It just sounded so old.. I was so completely wrong. I am in great shape and healthy and active..
I loved eating those wonderful Cuban sandwiches nearly every day for lunch. They were so good. Also I remember in elementary school having Krispy Kreme donuts and chocolate milk for a mid-morning snack. What were they thinking??? That wouldn't go over in today's society!
