Linda's Story

My Recent Life Moved back to Virginia in October 2003 after spending almost 7 years in Japan. We live in a great home on two acres of land with a lake and all sorts of wildlife. Son is 36 and daughter is 34. I retired in June 2013 from the school system as an elementary school guidance counselor. My husband works in health and safety and environmental services, as well as contracts. We became grandparents for the first time on May 9, 2013, when our son had a son, Ryland. Now I understand what it is like to love a grandchild and what special love it is. We can't imagine our lives without him and he has given us so much joy! Would love to hear from old friends and Rebels. Best wishes to all the graduates of 1971!! To answer some of the story wizard's suggestions: I always wanted to be a dancer or a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends were okay with whatever I did and never pressured me. I became a teacher and eventually a guidance counselor. Friends used to call me "Dear Abby" in school because they would confide in me with their problems. Hmmmm.....maybe I found my niche in life much earlier than I thought I would. If I'm going to work somewhere on anything that requires deep thought or concentration, I need to have a diet Sprite and feel at peace. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Roxie Walker. She is my maternal grandmother and was a tremedous source of inspiration for me. Obsessions: genealogy, environment and wildlife, turtles, my children, my grandson, and concerns about the world in general and where it is heading. I have lots of other interests that keep my mind busy and looking for knowledge. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the area off the laundry room and add on a much larger room for my antique Japanese doll collection. My dream home would be just the way it is now, only a bit larger. I've learned from my children to be patient and to keep my mouth shut in certain situations! If I won $100 million, I'd give 10 million of it to my children, then spend the rest on our debts, charity and causes. create a wildlife sanctuary, and provide for those who are truly in need. My current age is 61. When I was 12, I thought that people my age were soooooo old. I was so completely WRONG!! My "career" aspirations are to become a certified genealogist and publish the history of both my paternal and maternal lines. I have some brickwal...Expand for more
ls that I need to break down before I can complete the book. Secretly I have wanted to get my doctorate degree, but don't have the finances to pursue it. My best friend would tell you I'm a good person, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as "to myself" and not as outgoing and friendly as other people. I don't have a lot of friends, but the friends I do have are very close to me. No, I don't dress like I did 10 or 20 years ago, but my hair is still long. I've never been a short-hair person. I share my home with my husband, whom I find to be a wonderful person, very loving and giving. He spoils me rotten! No major victories in my life. There are many instances where I "almost made it", coming in second more times than I care to count. If I could do one thing over in my life, it would be to provide more spiritual training for my children. I believe I failed in that area. In 10 years, I hope to be very healthy and young in mind, body, and spirit. I'm going to get there by continuing to watch my health, exercising more, and choosing nutritious food. I feel that my relationship with God grows stronger each day. My oldest friend is Kathy Graf in Tampa, Florida. We met when we attended summer school together in 1969. I was 16 and she was 18. We have stayed in touch on and off over the years and I consider her still one of my dearest friends. What would surpise everyone at my high school reunion is that I still look basically the same, but much older. My style hasn't changed much. Maybe it should!?! My first job was at General Electric, where I got paid $2.25 an hour to work on an assembly line placing capacitors and resistors on a television motherboard. What I remember most about it was the monotony and the reality check of knowing I couldn't do this for the rest of my life. I worked there for 5 months, then quickly enrolled in college, one of the smartest moves I've ever made. One childhood memory I'll never forget is spending time with my maternal grandfather during a summer vacation. Two months later he died, making me realize that you never know when people you care about may die. I was sad, but never truly missed him until I grew older and the rest of my grandparents started dying. I hope old friends will remember me by saying I was basically a good person, caring about others, and leaving behind a genuine love for all that is good in this world.
