Linda's Story

from the time I was 11 I started babysitting, and that ended up a lifetime habit. During my junior and senior year of HS at Tennyson I worked at Capwell's 4 hours an evening, in the school adminitration office during the summer, and still babysat as well. The month before I turned 18 I got a job with the Alameda County Junvenile Hall int he steno pool (San Leandro), I worked for the County for 15 years and continued to work on weekends and evenings at Capwell's downtown Hayward. I worked as I took promotional tests when I could in many different departments but mostly the Probation Department (I typed petitions and child custody casework reports, took DPO reports on probationary persons in shorthand (yes, Carla, shorthand). I worked for the welfare department, the Public Health Finance Department, and in 1980 one of the administrators that I had worked for at Fairmount Hospital found me at Jack London Square at the probation department and asked me to come and work for him at Alta Bates in Berkeley (what a pay difference that was!), between leaving the County and going to Alta Bates I worked 6 weeks at the Butcher's Union in Oakland. I worked at Alta Bates for 10 years commuting from Hayward to Berkeley. Then in 1988 I moved to Antioch. In 1967 I got married and in 1969 gave birth to a son, my only child, and as it turns out is also a THS class of 1987 grad. I divorced my son's father when my son was 4 months old and raised him mostly on my own. He's now married and has two children. I lived in Antioch 22+ years, married, and am now recuperating from a shocking, cruel, ugly divorce, but am making it one step at a time, one day at a time. In my spare time I like to quilt, baby quilts are my favorite for friends and/or f...Expand for more
amily. I am a child of 5, grew up in Hayward in Fairway Park and lived in Hayward most of my life until I moved to Antioch and now for the past 9 months live in Vacaville. I don't get around as well as I would like, I had a very long (13 1/2 hr) back surgery and hip fusion that never healed properly. I use a scooter chair around the apartment when I am really tired. I lost a lot of blood in my surgery and had to have 5 transfusions. I am, therefore severely iron deficient and anemic (am I surprised? no, at least it explains why I'm so tired. I don't see my family very often. my siblings moved out of California 30 years ago so dealing with aging and failing parents was not easy - though the out-of-staters can't understand why (but then they weren't here). My older sister and my younger brother also graduated from THS and the two youngest sisters went to Moreau High, one graduated with honors (go Susie - she also graduated with honors from Portland Stated Univ.) The youngest sister dropped out of school (and everything else). Now this part is a JOKE for my very first date (chaperoned) at age 13 - I learned he and his wife purchased my family's home after my mother passed and I hear they are re-doing a lot to the house and I am very happy for them (Mr. and Mrs. Russell Pollard). If I ever tell you stories I promise they will only be the funny ones - like when the train (Southern Pacific) would go by (right behind our house and the house would shake and rattle an friends when they would come over would say "WHAT WAS THAT?" and we'd look at our watch and say that's the (whatever time it was) train right on time... Much luck to Russ and his wife (is the garden bench still in the front yard by the birch trees? Just curious.
